To baffle...or not to baffle?

Is it a good idea to use a baffle for speaker installations? What is the drawback/advantage to using one?

Is this for a sub? For a regular speaker there is no drawback because it is the conventional way. If it is a sub the drawbacks are that it is difficult to get it to sound the way you want it to (rattling and too much throw), and if done improperly, it will be the death of your subwoofer. Subs throw much more in an infinite baffle setup and that can lead to distortion and eventually a blown speaker.

I have a Philips FW-C577 Gameport mini system, the stereo with the little red meters, and on the speakers it has like a 6.5" sub (on each one), and then there's like the treb speakers, (I geuss just the regular one) and.. the sub doesn't crackle at all... But the regular speaker does a little, and I can't tell if it's the station I'm listening to, distortion, or if they're blown. Is there anyway I can tell what the problem is withouth going to buy that CD?
