Huge surrounds sometimes means the sub will have a pretty big xmax...Sometimes... I've also heard that it will probably mean the sub will lack in SQ. Also keep in mind the bigger surround takes away from the cones surface area.

Resonant engineering X.XX, JL Audio W7, Adire Audio Tumult, Acendant Audio Avalanche, just to name a few, that exibit around 1.25 - 1.5 inches of linear excursion one-way. All have been said to sound good if not amazing. And all have extreme output capabilities. A RE MT probaly has around 2 inches of excursion capability one way and has been said to not sound that bad.

I'm not saying all subs with really wide surrounds sound bad... It's just something I heard from a car/audio shop. By the way, the sub they had with the wide surround did sound bad lol.

usually subs with rediculously wide surrounds like the one pictured have a wide surround for marketing purposes(to make the sub "look" loud and impressive) A larger surround limits the subwoofers surface area thus lowering its displacement. The power acoustic fubr is a good example of too much surround vrs. excursion capabilities.
