I have a 1000 watt rms phonenix gold amp hooked directly to the factory battery of a 2004 Grand Prix. I'm not sure how many amps my alternator supports, but on occasion I get a warning on my dash thats says "Charging System Failure". I asked my installer about a getting a cap, but he said its a waste if I don't get my alternator wound to a higher output or replaced. Is this true?

if you have a weak charging system as it is - it would be true to say a cap will do nothing for you - if anything it will make the problem worse.

If you have a strong charging system and you want to add a cap - that's fine - IMO there's no "real" benefit, but in that case they're not going to hurt anything.

I know they smooth out the voltage a little bit, but my response to that is -- what good does that do?
I figure -- it's an amp made for a car, if it requires external capacitance to perform as it is intended, it's a poor design.

Thanx, I'll think I'll just add a larger Alternator and call it a day. Appreciate the advise

it will stabalize the voltage for a non regulated power supply amp. thats all i see that you get from a cap. other then the slight change in ac ripple in the dc lines shown on www.bcae1.com i forget the section # though.

Heh - you have one of the few smart installers around. Stick with him - he's a smart guy. Most would have told you to get a cap it'd solve everything. It's pretty rare to get the honest response you did.

Read up on GlassWolf's links. As I have stated before, CAPs can be useful if implemented correctly.

I have a mega power draining system and i keep being told i need a better cap by the car audio music store i goto, I have a 10,000watt earthquake mono block competition amp pushing 2 4000watt audiobahn immortal 12's running at 1ohm peak 4500rms, i cant turn my amp up high at all, i have a few problems when i do. The amp gets hot, the fan does not turn on for it(never does) earthquake wont give me the response im looking for when i ask them i asked 5 times and this is what they say everytime...
-IS my Fan broke?

THIS IS A CLASS D AMPLIFIER AND IT SHOULD NOT HEAT UP.

Love the response........so specific.....

I have a 200amp alternator i kno its not the biggest, but i am waiting for nathan to get back from vacation to talk to him about getting 2 HO alternators installed, What is the best capacitor out there to use, im told to get a 35 farad stinger cap... is it wrth the 350$? Or would i be better off buying 3or 4 2.5Farad tube capacitors? I will have 2-3 Optima Yellow Top batterys also, i have 2 wetcell batterys then one Optima Redtop right now, my audio dealer told me to go with redtop, and im hearing thats a mistake from alot of people because it is not deepcyle, my audio dealer is saying it is but not true deepcycle, so it really isnt deep cycle then? I need help! My music wont get no louder when i turn the amp up past a point just more distorted without poping my combing on the subs.... What should i have my idle rpm's at for a good idle amperage?
