Tuesday, February 14, 2006 - 01:06 GMT How would you know how big a signal you would need for an amp..... Because i was running a small amp off my computer and the signal wasnt enough so i used a preamp to boost it up....it worked then i got another amp and it works fine off the computer alone... but my problem is i want to know if the signal from the computer is good enough or if i boost it up can i get more out of the amp..... but then again too much signal would cause clipping... so how would you know how big a signal you need?

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 - 03:51 GMT Nester I would say anywhere from 500mv to 5volts. A line driver can take a very tiny input and amplify it up to 11 volts on the rcas.

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 - 03:57 GMT ok, yea, it all depends on the amplifer itself with the diffrent type of stages & classes.

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 - 04:21 GMT yea, the higher the input signal, the less work the amp has to do, so gain can be set lower. It will still do full output.

Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 18:28 GMT The cleaner the original signal the better it will sound. Adding a line driver to a dirty signal will make things worse so sometimes it is better to stick with your low voltage signal and use your gain at a higher level then to amplify the input signal and have a sh!tty output.. Polo.
