Bronze Member Username: GoatinPost Number: 22 Registered: Jan-06 | what capacitor size should be used is it 1 farad to 1000 watt's? |
Bronze Member Username: ZulkirU.S.A. Post Number: 57 Registered: Dec-05 | yup |
Bronze Member Username: GoatinPost Number: 23 Registered: Jan-06 | Is it ok to have a little more ,and do they add extra amp's to or just wattage? |
Silver Member Username: PelonaPost Number: 189 Registered: Dec-05 | capacitors suck |
Silver Member Username: RideredderCornell, IL USA Post Number: 184 Registered: Sep-05 | If I am not mistaken, a 1 farad cap is for 1000 watts rms. They don't add amps or watts. |
Bronze Member Username: ZulkirU.S.A. Post Number: 61 Registered: Dec-05 | all caps do are store power n discharge it fast...sort of like a second battery your alt has to charge along with your reg battery |
Silver Member Username: PelonaPost Number: 191 Registered: Dec-05 | capacitors are useless and a waste of money |
Silver Member Username: N2audioLawrence, Ks USA Post Number: 411 Registered: Mar-04 | they have a purpose, just not the purpose most people think. More of a luxury item, never a necessity IMO. |
Gold Member Username: CarguyPost Number: 5261 Registered: Nov-04 | Capacitors are designed to accomplish a specific purpose/task. It will not solve your alternator problem, nor is it a miracle item. If used properly, it can aid in supplying constant level of power and AC ripple filtering to the amp. There are many articles on the pros and cons of having capacitors. It is NOT a luxury item nor a useless "junk." In fact almost all cars should have one. The regulators that come with alternators can't filter as well as the capacitor. This is why sometimes you hear "aternator" noise. |

Bronze Member Username: GoatinPost Number: 25 Registered: Jan-06 | So I plan on getting a 1200 watt RMS 2400 MAXX amp does that mean that I need a 1.2 farad capacitor or a 2.4? |
Silver Member Username: N2audioLawrence, Ks USA Post Number: 439 Registered: Mar-04 | Using a cap to help with ac filtering is pretty bogus IMO. There's a GIANT filter a couple feet from the alt. The battery. |
Gold Member Username: CarguyPost Number: 5271 Registered: Nov-04 | If the battery supplied ALL the power, then yes, but that's not the case. Next time you have free time, get a scope and see just how clean the power filtering is when the alternator is supplying the bulk of it. Optidriven, you seem knowledgeable, so do read up on some of the articles written by professionals on this subject. Whenever I hear caps are "crap/garbage/bogus/over rated" etc, I know they haven't really researched it properly. I'm not for nor against caps, just want people to understand the truth before jumping into the bandwagon. |
Silver Member Username: N2audioLawrence, Ks USA Post Number: 443 Registered: Mar-04 | I know there is more than one school of thought. And I know which one I believe in. I believe if a person wants to use a cap that's their choice and I'd never tell someone with an otherwise solid electrical system not to get one, but I believe it should be the last addition to the system - and be last for a reason. |
