Jacob 28 Unregistered guest | I'm kinda new at this. Just getting into it. I purchased a 12 inch Kicker Comp Sub. It is 4 ohms and it total wattage is 300 and its R.M.S is 150. With a dual voice coil I have selected the sub already, I am now looking at a new amp I had this one in mind. Its a Pyramid 2 Channel, 240 watt max. Its 120 x 2 output. I am wondering is this amp will be suitable enough to power my Kicker. If its not, Please give me some specific amps that will work great with my sub. My price range is around $125.00, I know it aint much but hopefully I can get a decent one. Thanks alot for your help |

Pyramid is one of the worst companies as far as over-rating their amps. Looking at the manual of a PB101 (240w max - 120x2) I found its maximum current draw is 5A. It is not physically possible for that amp to make more than about 50w of "real" power. For that sub, being a dual 4 ohm voice coil I would recommend a mono amp that will give you 150-200w at 2 ohms. Check out the 400MSX at profilecaraudio.com. It is rated at 300w at 2 ohms, but with a conservatively set gain it would do a great job. Phoenix gold - Solid amp, 200w at 2 ohms http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/3402 Directed Audio - plenty of power http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/2280 Viper - http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/2469 |

Accurate, or close on power ratings, reliable, and generally good to look at too. Jensen and Power Acoustik could fit into that category as well. US Acoustics is right in line with them but, strangely, is listed 2 categories better in "good". Visonk and Planet Audio both make some BIG SPL subwoofer amps that are good enough to have success in the competition circuit. Seems to me that list, for the most part breaks stuff down by price w/o much consideration to anything else. |
