Silver Member Username: Safa19Post Number: 200 Registered: Apr-05 | will it be plenty big enough or will it just barely be? because on this site..... http://www.the12volt.com/info/recwirsz.asp It shows that i need between a 14 and 12 guage.... should i just find a 12 guage or 10 guage just to be on the safe side? or is 14 safe enough so that i will get all 200watts? |

Silver Member Username: Safa19Post Number: 204 Registered: Apr-05 | where would you recoment getting 12 guage wire from? would walmart cut it or should i go somewhere else? |
Gold Member Username: CarguyPost Number: 5091 Registered: Nov-04 | Just about any car audio shop will have them, including electronic stores. For 200w, 16-14 gauge is fine. Anything bigger, and you're just wasting money. Unlike power wires, there is very little current flowing in the speaker wires. Therefore, thick wire is not required. I bet $1000 that you will not be able to hear any difference between 16 gauge and 8 gauge wire for your speakers. The challenge is for "normal" human beings, no dogs need to apply. |
Silver Member Username: Safa19Post Number: 205 Registered: Apr-05 | alright thanks... walmart has Philips wire 14 gauge for 20 bucks for i believe 50ft would this be good? (its easier for me to get it there than an audio shop) http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2181629 |

Wire size requirement is dependant on current flow, and not wattage. To put out 100watts, you would have 20 volts of output, and 5 amps. 16 guage is good to 15 amps. "I bet $1000 that you will not be able to hear any difference between 16 gauge and 8 gauge wire for your speakers." Especially when you run 8 gauge straight to some dinky passive crossover with a 22ga inductor . Here's to overkill. |
