Hmm...why are things melting near your battery? this is a problem, if things are. The battery and area around it shouldnt get hot to the point where things are melting. Look at the plastic they use to make battery cap covers... (or like the little screw in pieces that come in an optima for the side mouunts, or cheap plastic top post covers..) those can even be left on... Your battery shouldnt be that hot.
