hi, as a project, i want to connect a car head unit to mains

before i build any frame for it, i need to connect the following:

pioneer head unit and a jetsound amp.

installing the speakers, tweeters and woofers is not a problem.

the main thing is, how do i go about installing / powering the head unit

please post advice. thanks.

Where are you installing it, exactly?

into the mains socket of my house

as in, i will build a frame for it once i can get it all wired up.

i know that i need a 12v inverter or adaptor, but i have to power up a amplifier also!

You're going to need a 12v DC power supply. One that puts out at least 20 amperes depending on the output of your amplifier.

Wire the yellow (battery constant) to the positive post of the power supply, then wire the red (ignition) to the positive post as well, except place a switch between it and the power supply or else the unit will be on all the time. The black (ground) from the headunit just goes to the negative post on the power supply.

The battery constant can also be hooked up to the positive post of the power supply. Hook up the remote on to the blue wire w/white stripe on the headunit. Then, once again, ground of the amp goes to the negative post on the power supply.

So, I do know that computer power supplies usually have 20 amps on the 12v rail. so would a 600w computer power supply work as the 12V DC power source required to power an Amp and headunit??

here's a link of what I was thinking of

It'll work, but keep in mind a 'multi purpose' power supply is going to have a cleaner power output.

Also, be careful, if you don't know what you are doing, you could easily start something on fire...

What is the RMS output on the amplifier and how many channels are you using?

well, i think i will start with a 200 rms amp

running the woofer, so 1 chan (bridged)

and the speakers, can run direct from head unit.

So the amp will pull about 10 amperes of average current draw...a 30 ampere power supply should power both units fine. I really like Astron as a power supply, but you can decide how much you want to spend on one-the main difference being how clean the power output is.

The Astron RS-35A should do what you want. Maybe the Daiwa RS300. If you want something cheaper, just look for a Pyramid...

You can find cheap power supplies for computer and make terminal connections. This one above will give you 12v @ 25amps for $22 Shipping included from Newegg, I doubt anyone can beat that. You can go super cheap and still get the power you need. However the more you pay the cleaner the power heheh. Hell i'm sure you can find one lying around to test it out with. I am running a kicker KX350.4 Blasting full power on one, it sounds good.

The negative cable which completes the circuit to enable the flow of electrons blah blah..hook it up to the chassis(metal part with good ground connection) of your car or directly to the negative battery terminal.
