Okay so this is the last step for finishing my install: THE ALTERNATOR!

I wanted one that ranges from 180-250 amps.
Here's were smart shopping gets in handy.

Company A: 180 Amps 309.00 including shipping
Company B: 180 Amps 175.00 including shipping
Company C: 200 Amps 579.00!!!
Company D: 200 Amps 239.99!!!!!!!!!!

LOL Look at how those prices change! All of these Companies are great, have warranties, and are very helpful. But of course it comes down to price. I didn't put any companies names because well it depends on your car and model.

Keep in mind that some use better quality parts then others as well. And some might be NEW where others might be rebuilt. There are several factors that can make a difference. Be sure you get a NEW alternator rather than a rebuilt - they will last longer. Also you want press fit avalanche diodes, this is a must ! As well as a heavy duty voltage regulator. Just some info to check on no matter where you get the alternator from.

Well I'll keep that in mind when i buy an Alternator. My uncles a mechanic so I'll have him take a look at it before I put anything in my car. (engine-wise that is). I'll make sure to get a warranty also. Thanks for the advice Nate.

no offense, but most mechanics I've met wouldn't know the inside of an alternator from the inside of a toaster, but they'd be able to install one.. as long as it didn't require any fabricating of brackets.

I was going to say that. There are too many ignortant mechanics. All they know how to do is, whatever training they got. Anything outside of that, and it's like fish out of water.
This is the same reason why they want to charge $300 - $500 for an installation, as soon as you mention it's HO. The same applies with "Big 3" upgrade.

I agree Isaac. There is no difference in installing a high output alternator in most cases with the exception of upgrading the wire. If it was me and I had to take it to a shop for an install - I would not mention that it is a high output alternator - they cannot tell the difference anyways. Just make sure it will be a direct bolt on like the factory alternator.

I'm not pointing fingers. I just meant be wary of mechanics when it comes to electrical systems. starter and alternator guys know starters and alternators, just like engine builders know motors. You want a specialist for specific tasks like this.
I've seen and heard about too many people being misinformed by garage mechanics that their car can't take a high output alternator, or upgrading the alternator is pointless, or upgrading the wiring will start a car fire, or any myriad of bullhockey you can dream up when it comes to common myths.
Just be careful. Your run of the mill automotive mechanic doesn't tend to know everything about cars, and isn't a specialist in any particular area. Great guys to have around, but it's always good to be sure you know what you're doing or having done, too.

I highly recommend www.excessiveamperage.com to anyone out there looking for a quality alternator at a fair price. Nathan built me a 180A alternator for my car and it was a direct bolt on so it was as easy as that. This is the best investment ive made for my audio system and i whould urge anyone that has alot of power running in there cars to do this before getting any capacitors or anything else. Nathan was very helpfull and friendly when i called for one.

Anybody needing an alternator for a 1994-2002 3.5L or a 1995-2003 3.0L Montero ? I am trying to get rid of one that a customer did not use. It is a brand new custom built 180 amp alternator. Email me at nathanpeddicord@yahoo.com or hit me back here.

let stop jerking nate off for a second...what should people be paying {on average} per ampere? like you know your getting a reliable amplfier from a reputable company if your paying about $1 per watt right? same thing should apply for alternators.

For the Average American made car I get about $1.40 an amp - sometimes less, depending on the alternator and the year of it. This is for 100% NEW custom built alternators - not rebuilt. The imports cost a little more to build as the parts are higher and a lot more labor is invloved in building them. Prices will vary between companies just as they do amplifiers - some use better parts than others, some have more overhead, etc. Just because you pay $500 for an alternator does not make it better. Then again, you cannot get a good quality alternator for $150.

You can't compare rebuilt alternator with newly built one.
That's like refurb amp vs new amp. Keep that in mind. I'd take Nathan's new alternator anyday over rebuilt.
