it will likely cause cancellation. firing toward the rear allows the waves to reflect and enter through the rear deck. the downside is that awful rattling that sounds worse than cher. if you go this route, be sure to mat the trunk and place foam behind the plate (great practices regardless). firing upwards will allow most waves through the deck, but a significant portion will also travel through the seat, running into the former and cancelling. however, it's not a feat to try both and determine which sounds best.

So it sounds better to face them back, because it reflects back? Does that mean for SUV's too? Because I turned mine towards the front and it sounded horrible. But I had it going right by the back seat. I turned it sideways and it sounded about the same as when I have them faced towards the back door. I find it sounds the best about in the middle, facing back. If I go right behind the backseat, facing back it doesnt pound as hard, and if they're right against the door, it rattles too much.
personally I'd aiam them toward the rear, angled up at the rear hatch glass.. or try straight up and see how it sounds. it's a hatchback though.. may as well take advantage of that cabin gain and that big reflective surface to give more signal path length.
