What are the ups & downs of using an amp with a regulated power supply vs an unregulated power supply for driving subs?

Amps with "fixed" power supplys like the JL slash series give you the power they say at 11V through 14V. Most amps give you a certain amount of power at 12V and more power at 14V if it can run at 14V.

GW, if I'm reading right, it looks like an unregulated ps would be better unless the manufacturer of a regulated ps amp is really on the ball. Regulated ps amps can loose some of their "ability" after a time??? Could this be why I see so many used JL 500.1s for sale???

if the charging system is up to par and the amplifier is of good quality, lifespan isn't an issue, and you'll get mroe power at lower loads with the regulated supply.. but these cost mroe to make, as you see with the prioe of a JL amp for example.
unregulated supplies are simpler to build and cheaper as a result. They also give more power at higher input voltages.
pros and cons to both really.

Who else besides JL makes a sub amp with a regulated power supply? And why are there so many used JLs for sale?

a lot of companies use regulated power supplies.. PPI os one example. PG is another.
any amplifier that has the same output regardless of input voltage, or lists it's power supply as being "MOSFET PWM" is ususally a regulated pwoer supply.
regulated supplies also tend to offer more headroom than amplifiers with an unregulated supply which can make a big difference in SQ and reduction of clipping of compression of output at high volumes. Like I aid, a lot of it comes down to amplifier quality and what you're willing to trade off to get what's important to you.

As for JL, the reason is because JL does not authorize any internet sales, and will not warranty any JL product bought from a net seller. Thus you'll never see an authorized JL sale on a website.
People know this, so they know that JL is a hot commodity on the net.. hard to find, and if you buy in a store, from an authorized dealer, you're going to pay retail of darned close to it, due to price regulation by JL to keep competition fair.
As a result, people get JL products to sell in stores, then sell them on the gray market on the internet at lower prices, violating the agreement with JL.
A lot of high end home and car audio companies will not sell on the internet, to give their store retailers a fair chance to do business.
