Four speakers - 1 pre-out ????

how can i connect four speakers to one pre-out, and how badly will it affect sound quality?

if i used the Y-connectors in the first description, wouldn't the left channel play on the front speakers and the right channel play in the rear, or vice versa

no sir. you have one pair of RCA outs and a four channel amp.
you split the signal so the left channel goes to front and rear left, and the right channel goes to front and rear right on the amp.
you're splitting to front/rear, not front/back.

audio is 2 channel anyway, so you get the same sound from front and rear speakers. the only separation is left and right.

so with only one preout then you wont be able to fade from front to back right.

you got it
that's why an electronic crossover would better suit you.. you can set front/rear balance at the EQ, then leave it there.
with a splitter cable you have no control over attenuation.
in my view though, rear speakers are really overrated, unless you want to drown out kids in the back seats though.
front stage is far more vital.
