how are you able to get 14.4V.....with a high current altenator?

Depends on the alternator. I don't think many stock alternators will quite reach 14.4 volts, usually in the high 13's. My ho alt puts out 14.4 volts at idle though, as long as I don't have a ton of stuff running, like my system.

alternators all put out 13.8 to 14.4 VDC above idle.
how much voltage they put out exactly is a function of the alternator's voltage regulator.
