It also depends on the materials used in the cone and surround.

Nothing is "waterproof". Water "resistant" maybe, but waterproof no. H2O is the universal solvent. Everything succumbs to it eventually. Just look at what the Colorado did to the Grand Canyon.

Yeah I do, but as a boat captain I've seen what the marine enviroment can do to electronics. I've seen so called "marine" speakers give up the ghost rather quickly.

I do have an old 10" Babbs metal cone sub I've yet to play around with. I still don't think it'd last to long, at least in saltwater.

Looks like the top pics except it has a blue anodized cone with a black frame/grill.

I had a pair of 4" Babbs which sounded pretty "tinny" so I'm not sure how good the sub would sound. Its an old design so probably would require a pretty large enclosure, like 1.5 ft^3.

I thought they utilized a steel cone but as it appears to be anodized it may just be aluminum. Lemme dig mine out and look.

:P

Nevermind. The thing's buried in my closet.

Maybe I'll drop it in a box tomorrow and have a listen.
