Is Combing two different sized subs a good idea?

I have 3 audiobahn 10's and i was thinking of getting two 12's. But i heard that this was a bad idea. My friend says that they will cancel each other out is this true.

Its not a good idea it wouldnt sound right.Just use your three 10s and use the money you were gonna spend on the 12s and get a good amp.
