What exactly does the low boost setting do a freq setting do?

I have a 2channel not bridgeable hooked up to two 12's I dont think the amp is putting out to its full potential does it have something to do with the low boost setting or the frequency filter setting ?

usually they give you a 12db boost at the crossover point that you select, but tthat feature often makes the music sound muzzled and distorted.
