ok, my 88 mustang , 4 banger, has 400 rms running 2 infinity 1230's. The lights in the car pulse to the woofers, so is a capacitor gonna fix that? the car starts right up, its not getting drained to the point that its dimming. It does it right off the start. And if i need a capacitor, do you need to charge it or what?

If you have 1988 Mustang, then it probably has 65A alternator. Most older cars have very small ones. So 65A x 12V = 780W. Now you will have to subtract heater/lights/radio/wiper etc from that total to see what's left for the amp.
At 400W rms, you're probably pushing it too hard. To really fix your lights dimming problem, you will have to get HO alternator. The good news is, since you have a popular car model, you should be able to find a HO alternator fairly cheap. A capacitor only stores energy, so if the alternator's not supplying it, it'll start taking it from the battery. And as you know, with batteries, if the alternator can't supply power, it'll die out eventually.
However, a capacitor will help with voltage rails. Caps are able to supply the stored energy to the amp at a much faster rate, thus giving you tighter bass.
Don't ignore the dimming lights warning. If you do, not only will you lose alternator/battery but also your car's electrical system.

also consider replacing the following three cables with larger gauge, new cable:
-alternator to battery
-battery to chassis
-motor to chassis

1: stop hijacking other peoples' threads.
2: stop asking the same damned thing over and over and over.
3: the guy at the stereo shop is an idiot. I feel I'm more than qualified to state that from what he told you, and my own credentials.
4: regarding batteries:
