...mount an amp on the BACK of a subwoofer box?

That's what a guy at Best Buy told me today. Seems unlikely...wouldn't it interfere with the sub's bass?

I'm skeptical because the same guy was telling me what a great deal and "incredible" sound his Rockford Fosgate 501s were, at over double online prices and that I'd have to buy a $100 wiring kit.

To his credit, he at least didn't push any Sony amps.

RF amps are fair amplifiers.. They aren't like Pyramid or anything, they just aren't audiophile grade per se.. not what they used to be in my opinion.
Yeah you can mount an amp onto the back or top of a sub box.
I just think it looks a bit ghetto, but it's done very often.
It's a good solution if you're really strapped for space, or need everything to come out easily.

Hahaha. It'd be an all in one subwoofer. I don't think you can call it, 'built in' amp. More like, 'screwed in'. :-)

GW,

if I went with the back-of-box mount, would I need to leave some space between the amp and the cabin wall for proper ventilation, or can the amp be positioned against the cabin wall?

Also, would the sub box need to be bolted down in order to keep from moving?

a: you do want some air flow, yes.
fans can help with that.
b: if you can bolt it down, do it.
it helps for anti-theft as well.
