Bronze Member Username: Jwbulger79Florida Post Number: 76 Registered: Nov-04 | i've got an '84 4Runner and i was planning on putting a set of 6.5" components up front. the problem is there is no place whatsoever to put the speakers in the door; i would have to build a custom box and surface mount it. i wouldn't mind doing that but today i made a model box out of cardboard to see how it would actually fit in the truck, and unfortunately it just takes up too much space(not much legroom in the old toyota trucks). the factory speakers are 4"'s mounted in the dash. i guess i will have to just get a set of 4" components. what do ya'll think? any recommendations for 4" component sets? any other ideas of how to get some bass up-front? the Diamond M341 set is in my price range, but i think i would prefer silk tweeters. any suggestions on good 4" components? on a more positive note, FedEx delivered my new Alpine CDA-9827 last night at 9:00pm. i was so pumped i told my girlfriend to go out without me and i installed it then. she called me a dork. but that's ok because i'm now basking in the blue glow of my new Alpine |

First of all, there is no way you'll be able to get much lower than around 60Hz from any set of 4" speakers. With that said, I think the higher quality the speaker the better the quality of the sound you'll get. If you can up the budget to about the $125-$150 range then I would suggest a very good quality 4" coaxial. You'll get a much better quality low end than from the Kickers you linked. Coaxials are less expensive than components. The higher quality ones have just as good a sound as components and often come with a seperate crossover. http://www.dls.se/english/speakers/424.htm These list for $189 but Scott Buwalda is an authorized dealer and can give you a very good deal. scott_buwalda@abraxis.com They have the silk dome tweeter you would like to have. If that is still a little too high, then check out the listings at CarDomain. Many speakers listed come with user reviews. http://www.cardomain.com/shop/speakers Good luck! |
Bronze Member Username: Jwbulger79Florida Post Number: 78 Registered: Nov-04 | thanks carl. appreciate the feedback. i decided to up the budget to these guys: http://www.carstereoworld.com/crystal/crycomp.html the CSC40s. frequency response is only 100hz on the low end. i'm also putting a 10" Type-R in the back of the 4Runner; will that pick up the slack up to 100hz or do i need to get a set of midrange speakers for the back seat? i dont know what to do, man. any feedback is greatly appreciated. i also have a pair of Polk 6x9's that were in the truck when i bought it. i was going to use those for rear fill and put a bandpass crossover(500hz-5khz) on them, but upon further examination, one of them is in pretty bad shape, so i dont think i'll use those guys. buying a set of midbass speakers will be over my original budget, but if i need to go that route to cover my midrange sound i will. would they be worth going over budget by a set of midrange and another amp or will i be ok with the 4" comps and sub powered by a 4ch amp for now? Glass, Damien, Johnathan, Isaac any thoughts? thanks again for the feedback carl. summary: 4Runner Alpine CDA-9827 -$200w/kit Crystal CSC40s 4" comp set -$120 Alpine Type-R 10" sub -$100 US Acoustics USC4065 65x4rms amp -$180w/kit Total cost: $600 or Alpine CDA-9827 -$200w/kit Crystal CSC40s 4" comp set -$120 6 3/4 midrange speakers ~$150 Alpine Type-R 10" sub -$100 US Acoustics USC4065 65x4rms amp -$180w/kit Class D amp ~200w ~$200 Total cost: $950 would the second setup be worth extra cost? i'm just looking for good sq, not trying to win any competitions and would like to stay within the original budget IF the increase in SQ isn't worth the 50%+ increase in cost. what do ya'll think? i guess ultimately i'll just do the first setup and see if i'm pleased with it and maybe upgrade later, but i would still like to hear what all of you think, being that i dont have any experience in this. thanks again |

The problem I see though is that if your sub plays up to 100Hz then you may find that your soundstage is going to be pulled to the back. Frequencies up to about 80Hz are generally not easy to localize. When you start going above 80Hz you will start hearing the music coming from behind you. You'll be playing up into the mid-bass range which is directional. Adding midbass speakers in the rear will have the same effect. I would take some of the money you would spend on the midbass, add it to your components money, and look for a good set of components that can play down to the 60Hz range and then crossover the sub in the 60Hz to 70Hz range. On the amp, I would go for a single 4 channel amp in the 85W to 100W range and skip the second amp, whatever speakers you get will perform better with the extra power. Those are my thoughts, hopefully you will get some "second opinions". |
Bronze Member Username: Jwbulger79Florida Post Number: 79 Registered: Nov-04 | good stuff. thanks carl. yeah i really want to avoid hearing anything above 70 or 80hz from behind me if possible. i did some looking around for shallow 6.5" comps and found that the Infinity Reference's only have a top-mount depth of 1 15/16" as opposed to the 2.75" i was originally looking at. i might be able to squeeze that in. does anyone know of any other shallow 6.5" comps? when flush mounting the speaker box on the door, can i leave off the back of the box and have the back of the speaker all the way up against the door, or do i need to give it space to breathe? will low end 6.5" infinity's sound better than a good set of 4" comps? any ideas on the most space-efficient way to surface mount 6.5" speakers on a door with no speaker cutouts? i was thinking about cutting a hole in the door panel to get me an extra 1/2" maybe. even further, i was thinking about actually cutting a whole in door itself. behing the first layer of metal i have about another inch and a half before the power window mechanism is in the way. would that not be a good idea? |

Forget 50Hz entirely. If you want separates in that 4runner, use Qform kick pods. no cutting required, and they look stock once installed, and are offered in a myriad of matched factory colors. |
Bronze Member Username: Jwbulger79Florida Post Number: 80 Registered: Nov-04 | thanks glass. kicks wont work though; even less space down there and the fuse box is there also. what do you think about surface mounting some shallow 6.5"'s on the door? can i have the speaker directly against the door? should i cut the door? |
Gold Member Username: GlasswolfNorthWest, Michigan USA Post Number: 6163 Registered: Dec-03 | you don't want the speaker to ground out to the door, so I'd cut it. you can fiberglass new door panels though, which will push out the doors some at the bottom to house deeper speakers. That's very common to do in cars now at events and such where they want larger speakers in newer cars with thin doors. That also means you can make up a whole new door panel with a little embroidery work, too, and save the factory ones. then even if ya do cut the door metal, you can cover it back up later and who'd ever know? |
Bronze Member Username: Jwbulger79Florida Post Number: 82 Registered: Nov-04 | sounds like a plan. i'll cut a hole in the door metal and make a new panel. the current panel is 20 years old and it would look nicer in there with some new upholstery anyway, and i just dont think i'll be happy with 4" speakers. any good places to start researching how on how to do glasswork and upholstering? any good places to see pictures of custom work people have done to get ideas? thanks again. |
