you either have the amp load wired too low, you have a dead short somewhere, or your alternator can't handle the load.

I think you have lower than 2ohm load(most good amps can handle 2 ohm load) or just turn the volume down then turn the sensitivity control min - max amount on the amp down and your crossover. Tweak some stuff on the amp!!!
the person never mentioned who made is amp or a model number. the gains on an amp aren't meant to be used as a volume control. they should be set once to match the input line voltage, then left alone. if they are set too high, and the amp will clip. don't just start turning knobs and pushing buttons if you have no idea what you're doing.
