I am a military spouse who has purchased a JVC 47" LCD tv for my husband who is in IRAQ. I want to get it all set up for him before he arrives home in a couple of months. I want him to be able to use the tv screen as a computer screen via his laptop.

I was told that I need this VGA to HDMI cable. I CAN NOT FIND IT ANYWHERE. Can anyone with great knowledge about these things, please help me with this? I sure would appreciate it. Thanks

I take it the tv does not have separate HDMI and VGA inputs?

VGA is analog, HDMI is digital, there's no cable to connect the two. The laptop needs a video card with HDMI or DVI output.

There is no cable that can do it; however there are conversion boxes available which are capable of adopting PC output (VGA) whether it`s a laptop or desktop and converting it to HDMI.

Its not possible to go from a VGA signal to HDMI with just a cable. However, there are some devices that pitched as VGA to HDMI cables, but they actually have a converter built in. Also, since VGA does not carry the audio signal, any conversion would lack sound.

It depends on your configuration.

Assuming you're using the speakers on your TV, you can connect the headphone jack on your PC to a 3.5mm audio in jack on the TV (assuming you have one).

You would need a 3.5mm Male-Male cable like this on from tekCABLE.com

If you don't have a 3.5mm Audio In jack on the TV, you can use a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

On the other hand, if you're using an A/V receiver, you could connect from the PC to your receiver.

RCA is probably a little better quality but you probably won't be able to notice the difference through your TV. It's more important to consider how your TV is setup. On many TVs, when you select the VGA input, it automatically selects the 3.5mm Audio port.

I would be skeptical of this cable - it doesn't look like it has an active chip in it. Has anybody had a chance to try it?

A note to clear up this issue about VGA to HDMI cables.

You can buy a cable with HDMI at one end and VGA at the other. This is not for connecting your computer to your TV to use it as a monitor. It is for connecting your HDMI compatible DVD player/digibox/HDD recorder etc to your TV screen with a VGA input. This is quite common on flat screen TVs nowadays.

It does also carry the sound information from the DVD player (with HDMI output) to the screen (with VGA input).

Although you could physically connect this cable from a computer VGA output to a screen with an HDMI input, it will definitely not work.

This is usually stated in the specs of the VGA-HDMI cables they are selling on ebay.

Hope this helps.

You need to get a VGA to HDMI Converter.
http://www.ecrater.com/p/7324464/av-component-vga-to-hdmi-adapter

Plug a VGA cable from the computer to the converter and plug an HMDI Cable from the converter to the LCD TV.

Hi all,
Question regarding the VGA to HDMI - what if your video card supports a digital signal output through the VGA port - couldn't you then use the VGA to HDMI cable? (And then, wouldn't the VGA then really be a DVI-D other than pin config)
I believe my NVIDIA GeForce FX go5200 is capable of this digital output through the VGA port tho I'm not sure...any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
