Who needs one? Anyone who wants to put together an immersive home theater surround sound system without breaking the bank should have this receiver on their short list. Out of the box, the receiver can do nine channels of surround, plus up to four subwoofers. This means you can do a five-channel surround system with four height channels (5.4.4) or a seven channel system with two height channels (7.4.2). If you want to go all out with a 7.4.4-channel surround system, all you need to do is add a stereo power amp to drive the front channels and the receiver will take care of the rest.

We’ve had the Denon AVR-X3800H in the labs for several months and used it to drive (and review) Focal’s 7.2.4 Sib Evo surround sound speaker system. It offers 105 Watts per channel of clean power and can easily fill a medium to large sized living room or home theater with crisp dynamic surround sound. In terms of immersive surround support, the X3800H has it all: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Imax Enhanced, Auro 3D and even Sony 360 Reality Audio.

The receiver includes Audyssey’s advanced MultEQ XT 32 on-board for speaker calibration with a calibration microphone included. There’s also an option to upgrade to DIRAC Live Room Correction at an additional cost.

Just a note: price has varied a bit over the past couple of days and I’ve seen it as low as $1,335 (earlier today). Great time to grab one of these bad boys. Super versatile and expandable to 11 channels with four independently adjustable subwoofers (7.4.4) by adding a simple stereo power amp.
