socks | Searching... While people have shared info here, in my opinion it's not specifically for that purpose. I'm not the message board enforcer. But, look again at the title of this thread. "9 Inch Projection TV for $9. Should I Or Shouldn't I?" That is what the "babble" here is about. There are plenty of links on the 'net to generaly share info. |
Searching ForIQ | Gadgit - Thanks for the excellent link. Just what I was looking for... |
| Hey, this is for all you people that think this is a total scam. I was doubtful that this would work half as well as the webtv 100" guy said that it would. But, for fun yesterday when my mother was sleeping I constructed a nice little projection box with a large amount of scrap cardboard. It's nothing to look at, but that doesn't matter. As i used scrap cardboard it costed me absolutely nothing. To test the theory of projection i broke off a lens from an old scratched up magnifying glass and used that. Everything's working great except the image clarity is shite because of the old lens. Everything about this plan works all i need to do is buy a nice fresnel lens. Does anyone know a good place in Canada where i can buy an inexpensive fresnel? |
LoUcKsInAtOr | Oh yeah, and also my standards are probaly a ton lower than the more experienced projecter constructors in this forum as i am only 14 years old and do not have a large income flowing to me. If you're just a regular kid like me, this project is a fun thing to make and is a very excited contraption to have made and to be proud of. As for you other people who are obviously obsessed with putting this idea down are materielestic 30 year old children who probably live in there mothers basement reading there comic books and bathing in there own filth. This idea works and works fine for me. (No offence to anybody I'm just in a bad mood) |
Gadgit | The magnifying glass is a better idear if you can find 1 around 100mm this will give you a better image then a fresnel and any staitionary shop should carry both lenses if you chose to go with the fresnel and they dont no wot you are talking about then ask for a page magnifting sheet and if you go with the magnifying glass you should no that thay are directional if you get a bad image then flip it over to the other side. |
Gadgit | The reason we say 100"tv for $9.99 is a sham is because the images they show on the web pages are not comming from the projector they made they r comming from a store bought lcd projector and they got it from all the over priced fresnel lenses they sold this is why it is a sham. But not the idear. |
Anonymous | i built it and it is true you get what youpaid for. the image projected is like looking at the tv from about 4" away. very pixled. computer monitors work better but aren't bright enough, for obvious reasons. bottom line if you want a 100" projection tv you can watch from 100 feet away order it. but if you want to watch it from 6 feet away better get the real projector. i saw the screenshots, they are full of sh_t. i built mine out of a 22" hi-res tv and didn't get results like that. they used the real thousand dollar projector for those shots also if you do have a 20' area in your house and you get it, you don't need to buy a real projector screen. just go to lowes (or whatever) and get a vinyl window shade, eggshell white nonshiny. if that doesn't give you enough contrast of color get some krylon pearlescent spray paint and hit it. it will look pretty good |
ELIpreviouslyANONYMOUS | i have also got to say that i disagree with the point of using a smaller tv. a larger tv will not have to be magnified as much and will not show as large of pixles. a 27" will sit closer and only be magnified abouthalf as much making a clearer image, clearer not clear it is not concievable to get a sharp image from this. well i take that back. you could use a 32" HDTV and put the projector about 6 or8" from the wall and get a 10" image that is vary clear. |
ELIpreviouslyANONYMOUS | by the way i don't want you all to think tha ti did it wrong i said 'pixled' perhaps what i meant was... blurry. and a lak of color |
Motley | Man... I don't believe what this thread has come to. Maybe its title should just be changed to "Let's Argue!" So, how come if someone is willing to invest honest dollars towards a high-end big screen system, they get called names? Honestly, this crap has gotten downright stupid. Talk about your basic HATE. OK, so I just happen to not have low expectations for my screen image and so I'm willing to spend what it costs to get the best. Hmmm, that must mean that I'm one of the "30 year old children who probably live in their mothers basement reading comic books and bathing in their own filth." Gawd. Take us, Lord. We're done down here. Look (for the 10,000th time), if you guys love cardboard TV -- FINE. Have it. But, people, it is what it is! Don't get on this thread and claim that it compares in any way with a high end big screen system. I'm SORRY some of you can't afford better. Life s**ks. But just because we who can are pointing out an Internet scam, we are not putting down what you watch. Hay, don't flatter yourselves. We don't even know you, will never meet you and (please read this next part s-l-o-w-l-y) WE DON'T CARE! Sheesh, folks. Get a grip! On the other hand, now we're getting more people checking into this board and...despite what some of us have been saying regarding having direct experience with cardboard TV, are claiming that fresnel lens TV "works". Well, HO-key. Newbies checking into this board, I suggest you read this entire thread from the first post and then judge for yourself which is the more reliable way to pursue a home theater system. That's about all I can say at this point. I'll be content to leave it at that! |
Motley | Maybe that was a strong response I posted just now. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out where all this HATE comes from towards those who are simply pointing out the truth - that cardboard TV is not all that and a bag of chips, as the Internet ads claim. It's like some folks are in some kind of Cult Of The Fresnel Lens or something! Their calling names to those who determine to build or buy a good high-end home theater system is just downright weird!!! I don't get it!! |
| I agree that the image that a cardboard box projector using a TV doesn't give the best results, and in a lot of cases it is unwatchable. However if you have a flat screen portable then you can get a half way decent picture as it will be sharp to the edges, however the brightness with these TV projectors is no way near bright enough for everyday use. and just like to point out that "I AM ONE OF THOSE GUYS SELLING THESE LENSES ON THE INTERNET" but i am not a conman, visit my site http://www.projectiontv.co.uk for good honest advice and about DIY projectors. I also try to point people in the right direction to build a DIY Projector, and that is to use an LCD screen. but i reckon everyone who is planning to make a DIY projector to try out the TV cardboard projector first, as it can give you a very good grounding in optics before you splash out on an LCD screen. as you can re-use the lens in the LCD projector which is a good idea to place the fresnel infront of your ligt source to distribute the light. and as for bieng able to purchase a lens for 0.50, that just aint true, well at least in the UK it isn't, the only stationary place i have found that sells page magnifiers is Office World and they are priced at £8.99 so i think my price of £5.99 is competetive especially since i provide support in my forums and i also host for download a few different sets of plans. Regards Stuart Buchanan www.projectiontv.co.uk |
socks | Stuart - at least you are standing up and admitting the limits of this fresnel TV system. I did experiment with the 4 inch LCD system, but my exploded big screen picture contained enlarged pixels. The resolution wasn't to my liking. I generally like the LCD platen/overhead projector idea because you are at least starting with a 12 inch high resolution LCD panel. But, at this point, I'm with Motley...hell, just buy. Many good LCD projectors have gotten cheaper than 64 inch flatscreen TVs. I won't mind paying for replacement bulbs, as I'll use my LCD projector only to watch DVDs and sports. So, I wish all you Dr. Frankenstiens out there good luck! (For a ton of DIY ideas, look at The Intelligent 1's July post above). |
socks | And, Motley ... regarding the name calling... It's not about HATE. It's about ENVY. |
Searching ForIQ | Could someone detail the wiring necesary for the LCD screen? Is there a direct feed from the Television to the LCD or do you have to use a computer? If you need to use a computer... How do you get a TV feed from your computer? Thanks |
ELIpreviouslyANONYMOUS | my appologies stuart. your site i had not seen the images are more like what i am getting. my post was mostly for the webtv100inch.com guys. my badd. i am interested in this lcd stuff though do you sell the plans for that too. i guess ill check out your site and see. thanks for being honest on your site. |
socks | Searching ... my 4 inch LCD screen came only with an RCA composite video jack which easily connected to my DVD player through my VCR "out" plug. (I channel through my VCR so that I can also use the VCR to watch regular TV on the big screen). If your DVD won't play a picture through your monitor through the output jack, you may need a DVD "decoder" connected connected from your DVD to your VCR, as DVDs are copy protectged. But, here's the real problem. RCA composite video seriously limited my resolution capabilities. I couldn't find a mininature LCD monitor with increased resolution S-Video or component video jacks. So, to answer the question I think you're asking, the monitor connects directly to the DVD player but then you may be faced with a ten foot wide grainy mess. Yeah, you can see what's happening onscreen, but that's not good enough for me. You can order all kinds of monitor adaptors on the internet to suit your needs. But, like I said, the problem I ran into is though the picture looked fine on a 4-inch monitor, blowing it up to ten feet through DIY experiments also blew up the blemishes, i.e., pixels. I wasn't happy at all with the results. Maybe you'll have better luck. |
socks | Again, scroll up and check out The Intelligent 1's Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 06:21 pm post above. It attacks DIY from just about every angle. He even includes Stuart's link. His information will certainly point you in the right direction, if you insist on building your own home theater, coardboard TV or otherwise. |
Searching ForIQ | Thanks socks. Does anyone with a larger (than 4")LCD have the same resolution issue? |
Motley | Let me throw in my 2 cents. Socks is right about resolution. I plug my DVD player right into my LCD projector through a direct S-Video input, but I also have jacks on my LCD for the new higher resolution component video connection. So, I now have to upgrade my DVD player to output component video. What I'm trying to say is that socks is right...RCA composite video limits your resolution and also a 4 inch monitor is constructed only to make the picture acceptable on a 4 inch screen, and why not? The manufacturers don't figure on its tiny picture being blown up to 10 feet or more. You have to start out with a s**t kickin' high res video source, otherwise, you're just augmenting "blemishes" on your big screen. My advise is try to hook up through an S-video connection, if not a component video connection (the later of which I don't think they make a small monitor for). And search theother DIY forums for ideas. Good luck! |

Gadgit | Stuart it would seem that New Zealand has 1 up on the rest of the world then as I got 2 lenses for 0.50nz each but I went back today to ask the shop if this was RRP and he said no I got them at a speical price as they had been in stock for many years but the RRP of them is $2.95nz witch in pound would be just over $1 so maybe you could change your suplier to give ppl an even cheeper lens. |
Gadgit | Funny how when someone ask's a question about projection tv ppl pounce and say this thred is not about questions on how to buind 1 its about 100"tv for $9.99 should I or should'nt I. But someone ask's about LCD and everyone answers... |
Gadgit | Also Funny how Prof and myself point ppl to Stuart's forum and ppl shoot us down and call us internet shamers |
socks | And Funny how Gadgit once again takes everything so personally. The Intelligent 1 also pointed to Stuart's column. So what? People reading these posts can make up their own minds. Who's saying that pointing anyone to a site like Stuart's or Prof's makes you a shamer? All we are saying is there are better forums to discuss in great detail how to build fresnel lens TV than here. But, if you want to discuss it here anyway, are those that oppose going to come to NZ to bust you? No. Nobody here is professing to be message board police. But, at least Stuart - a seller of lenses - has stood up (at least on this board) and admitted that fresnel lens TV can't compare with an an LCD projector. That's honest good information. Prof and the other purveyors and some of the defenders of cardboard TV argue that the fresnel system is somehow comparable (not YOU, Gadit!!). So, someone new considering a fresnel lens may get confused and succumb to a scam site. And, as far as I can see, the only "pouncing" on this board is being done by the cardboard TV faction in the form of all this name-calling going on. Most everyone else is saying over and over again "WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOU WATCH" and "IF YOU LOVE CARDBOARD TV, HAVE IT". It's mainly the cardboard TV defenders that are making this discussion adversarial. Gadgit - One more thing...I believe that on your first post, you said you were "disappointed in this forum" because we were (my spin) actually discussing the topic instead of putting all the emphasis on how to build a better cardboard home theater system. That, and to address weird ramblings like those of Mr. Truth, are why I believe it's good to remind everyone what we're KIND OF here to generally discuss. We are not out to take you or anyone else down. I've got better things to do than attack people that I don't even know about a subject that - when you get right down to it - doesn't matter much beyond your own home. |
socks | Gadgit - I scrolled up. Motley wrote in resposne to you're being "dissapointed" because we weren't generally discussing how to build big screen TV: "if you bother to scroll up, you'll see that this message board is about taking apart an Internet scam run rampant, not about whether cardboard TV is OK to build at all. So, why are you "dissapointed" in this thread?" If you think that's "pouncing", try getting called a "loser", "whiner", "tosser", "a 30 year old bathing in his own filth", etc. |
Gadgit | Socks - I wasnt taking it personlly just making a few points. You seem to have contridicted yourself alot in your last post maybe you should scroll up yourself and check the reference points where you are getting your marterial from. Prof never said fresnel lenses were any good infact he said not to use them. I was a little hastey in my first post and hadnt read all the posts so if I could take that back I would but there is no way of deleting the post. This will be my final post on this board as I think we are just going around in circles going over and over what has already been said and getting more negative against each other. Bye to all and happy vewing |
VVega | 8===D()-: |
socks | Well! Re: Gadgit, isn't SOMEONE touchy? I do agree that we are going in circles here. But, this "getting negative" seems to be the nature of these internet message boards. I checked other msg boards out...nothing but calling each other names, putting each other down, etc. So, I don't know where Gadgit will go to post, but I wish him luck! I certainly didn't mean to offend him. I only responded to his charges. |
| Hi everyone! I ordered a lens from this guy on eBay. I got a pretty good picture from a 13" TV. Not crystal clear, but we ain't so worried. My kids enjoyed making it and love watching the BIG 'toons on the wall. I was thrilled at investing just $10, investing time with the rugrats, and most of all watching this novel idea at work. It ain't an HDTV, but it's OK. I am learning new tricks to tweak it daily and love showing this gadget off to their friends and mine. What a marvellous idea for the price! I found a place to get the lenses locally now, and pass the idea of to anyone interested in having some fun. The kids have lots of uses for these lenses. To think ten bucks could bring such joy to them, tickles me. Quite the science...and great for frying bugs in the sun!*grin GIVE IT A GO & ENJOY! |
I_Built_One | Built a projection unit yesterday. Used black foam core for the box and a fresnel from some e-bay dude and a 13-inch TV. I project the image onto a white wall. The results I got have all been addresed on this message board at one point or another. 1. The room has to be VERY dark. 2. The center is sharp but the outside edges are blurry. 3. Brightness is a problem. 4. Cartoons actually look pretty decent. 5. Video games (PS2) don't look very good. They are difficult to play because you can't clearly see what's going on on the outer edges. 6. Movies and regular tv shows are borderline tolerable to watch. 7. It's fun to do. 8. My TV is upside down. 9. I opened my TV up and reversed the horizontal wires. It was easy to do and luckily I'm not dead. I don't recommend this for people who are really looking for a high quality image. If you're looking for something fun to do, especially with the kids or to watch cartoons, it's actually worth the few bucks and the couple of hours it will take to build a decent one. I really wish the video games came out decent. That's really what I wanted it for. Very disappointed with that. If the video game has extreme contrasts in colors then it's playable but I want to be able to play all my games on it. In my free time I'll try to tweak things a little bit to get the best picture I can but I think the key to building one of these units is to curb your high expectations and have fun. |
Brandon Y | just don't pay for the plans...this place has easy to follow plans. www.DoesYourRoomSuck.com ...I was also reading it and saw that you will get a "questionable pvc product" free after ordering all five so i started typing stuff in and found this link www.doesyourroomsuck.com/questionable.htm enjoy |
Brandon Y | sorry that's http://www.doesyourroomsuck.com and http://www.doesyourroomsuck.com/questionable.htm |
| Newbie here with a different slant on the situation. Everyone is free to make their own decisions. And we all know that a $5000 LCD projector is goign to piss over a $2 plastic lens in front of an upside down tv. So you can tweak and tweak till your hearts content, but it will never be as good as a LCD projector. But hey, sounds like a fun project to try out and costs less than what i spend on sprite in a day. So i have my lens on it's way, see how it goes (i am not that niave to expect that i will be sitting in front on an IMAX theatre). A bit of a DIY quest, should be fun, i'll tell you how i go if anyone is interested? Till next time have fun Ladies and gentlemen! |
socks | At least in these later posts the folks who are interested in fresnel lens TV are now being entirely honest about the limits this system. Useful information for those checking in who wonder "should I or shouldn't I?" If you want to build one, it's fair to at least know what you're gonna get! That's the secret the scam sites don't want you to know. |
| OK, back again, just got my fraynel lens and did a quick bang up job of the projector. It is now pitch black and i have got it focussed, it's a pretty cool novelty. I havn't fully sealed it or anything, but i've got it going, and it you can see it with fair clarity, but it is a soft (as in not sharp) image, the brightness is low, but hey, i am pretty happy with this little experiment. All in all, give it a go, if it's only for impressing a couple of mates go for it, its' worth the $8 or whatever. and that's my 2 cents! Keep the dream alive and go the DIY! |
| whoops, i spelt fresnel how it sounds! fraynel, my bad! |
webster32 | Tried the 100" Big Screen TV plans. The smooth side of the fresnel lense is actually supposed to be facing outward, towards the wall. The entire picture is focused, of course, the clarity isn't that great, but the picture is reasonable. At least for my 13" TV, the room didnt' have to be completely dark. Also, if you use two fresnel lenses, both with smooth side facing outward, the image stays the same as on your tv. In other words, left is left, right is right, and you don't have to flip it upside down. I still can't figure out how www.webtv100inch.com/ScreenShots is able to justify the clarity of the images, but this is not a scam. My screen was simply made with 6 pieces of 18 X 12 matte white paper, taped with scotch tape, with a black electrical tape border. Size of final screen was 36 X 26, or 45" diagonal. The projector box was made of old cardboard lined with construction paper. Still my image comes out clear. All for now. |
webster32 | Also, i saw on some sites, people who made their projectors had the tvs INSIDE the boxes. Then it would obviously make sense why the remote wouldn't work. My box is attched to the front of my tv, which does have a "curved" screen, by two pieces of duct tape. I also taped around the edges(between the box and the tv) with electrical tape to prevent light leakage. I also omitted the circle on the front of the tv, and just taped the fresnel lense on, with no carboard covering it. This actually worked better than with the circle, which just takes more time to make. Also, try making a smaller image first; place the projector about 5 feet from your screen, about 50 inch projection. Of course the picture isn't as good as a lcd projector or even a bstv, but if your looking for an inexpensive method, this produced fairly good images. |
| you can get the lences for like a dollar on ebay i found a nice site with free plans to build it. im gona experiment with it and get it to work better than most the free sites. it cant realy be that hard. by what ive read you all have the same problems. i have a question though would using 2 lenses make the immage upright and proper. i was planing on using this for my ps2 and if the arrows arnt right how can i play ddr. well good luck to you all and myself. |
Anonymous | Hi ya Andrewmahlman email me and I will tell ya all about it, it being fresnel and why it wont be perfect k_m.malaquin@xtra.co.nz I will give ya the in's and out's and the cheep fixes... |
andrew mahlman | thank you i jsut emailed you |
Anonymous | dude, dont waste your money. All it is, is just a rectangular flat magnifying lens. You need to turn your television upside down. And it looks like sh!t anyway. |
Pec0s | thanks alot eveyone..............for sucessfully wasting a perfectly good 1.5 hours of my meaningfull life. |
Anonymous | Now for the answer to the post. "100 inch projection TV for $9.99? Should I or Shouldn't I?" No, and Yes. No first because it's not worth $9.99. It's worth much cheaper. Try buying lense direct. and Yes cause it's a fun little project. Just don't have high expectation. And don't believe any of the website screenshots that sells these things for $9.99. |
| O what the hell im gonna do it lol why not im just a kid with nothing better to do and ill tell ya what im gonna mess with it till i get it so its sharp and not fucl<ed up (i really dont give a flyin if its dark) and if i figure it out ill post pics of it (if i possiably can from what ive read you cant take pics of it but ill see if i can but if i cant im really sry lol) and step by step info on how to do it if it works (im not sayin it will) and if it works to wat i like cheers rigtht? |
Gadgit | Hi there Madiguana the lens has alot of improfections and will not give you a sharp image there are people who have spent years trying you can get a viewable image by placing a apture board in the setup but it wont ever be sharp with a fresnel lens but if you are going to get one on ebay search hard as you will find a person selling them for $1.95us + p&p that is a good deal he will also give ya links to diy plans. The best way to go is to get your hands on a 100-180mm dia by 500 focal lenght Meniscus lens this will give you a sharp image and it will be a bit brighter also the screen must be the couour of tin foil this colour is very reflictive and will make the image viewable in lit rooms |
Gadgit | also pic's of the image wont be posable without an expensive digi cam unless you have one that can adjest the shutter speed to atleast 2secs as the projector will only projuce 400 lumes on a white screen and close to 700 no a silver screen |
| Yeah i have a digital camera (was my dads a really expenseive thing too...) anyways there is a way around the blured edges from wat ive learned and since i already have the lens its free! lolbut wat you should do is "All you have to do is to focus your image to the best you can, then you put some cloth, plastic, glove or anything around your hand so that your fingerprints won't stick to anything you touch. Then you simply put your finger in the middled of your fresnel and push it in so that it flops in and becomes concave shaped to your side. It should be concave to outside of the box and convex to the inside of the box (tv screen side). If your imaged became all blurred, then focus it again, but make sure the fresnel doesn't flop out again. If it flops out, then push it in again so that it'll flop in." and im using a set of plans that allows the lens to move in its own little box inside the box but u have to laydown in front of it lol im gonna start workin on it today good luck to me! (and as for the light i have an idea on taht this is fun like my hovercrafts!) |
Gadgit | Yea I heard that works but it still wont be as sharp as a glass lens. also line the inside of your box with tin foil or paint it silver this will increase the brightness dont paint it black like most plans tell you as black sux up the light |
| Yeah Im not gonna use black for the inside cuz it sux up all kinds of things from heat(shirts pants cloths cars etc) to of course light (great example a black hole in space..) so I think ill make it silver the only problem i seem to be having is gettin the words right i might make the one with mirrors in it and wood. I would get a glass lens but i dont kno where to get one localy I might check 2 places now that I think about it and i dont have money to spend im alredy payin for my own cable, cable modem and cell phone plus im starting to work on a car :D and i dont have acess to a credit card so I cant get one online sigh but if i cant figure out the word problem i might have to go with the mirrors (Id rather play inside the tv I found it entertaing last time I did lol) well if you know how to fix this plez plez tell me. (once i get a great setup im gonna do everything i can to prove it since i have multiple acounts on comcast.com im gonna post it all there ill put a link up when im done) long message rofl. |
Gadgit | Here is a link to flip the image and invert the words if you want to play inside your tv http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/yoke.html |
| Alright, I read a lot of these, took a lot of my time but I must say guys. I bought a box pre built. Came with two lenses. Here is the link. http://www.pacepic.com/projector/ ~ I gotta say, I placed it on my 13 inch regular tv and was very impressed. However, i sought better crispness like on that other guys website. So I went out and bought a 14" flat screen, fixed the problem right up. I now watch tv to that exact crispness with no fuzziness. THIS WAS THE BEST PROJECT I ever did, and dont let anyone tell you different, serioulsy becuase had I built my own, what is 20 BUCKS??? come on now, as opposed to 2,000-6,000 dollars? lets get real, i think we can spare to watch the movies at night. i can give you screenshots of mine, it turned out very nice. i love playing the xbox on 100"!!! Its awesome. |
| lol i got a cheaper lens at a garge sale and built it everything is good sept the slight bluriness (i had to give the lens i wanted to use back to my dad... damit lol it was great no shitty edges o well looks like i walk myself up to the hobby shop lol) anyways im thinking up a good way to fix the dark problem and since i have those materials in my room (or go to a store possiably a doller store) i can test it soon if it works ill give you the site link (the site isnt finished i have online shcool to do plus manage 1 site and finish the other one plus the projector site and im busy programing all that in 4 hours on a comp hmmm not much time to spare sept school i have a seprete 3 hours to work on that so it could be about aweek or two before its finished.) |
| Also Gadgit, is that site reliable cuz id prefer not to burn my face off lol (from what i have learned if you do somthing wrong and touch somtin ur not supposed to it can kill you so im just makin sure that you find that site reliable thanks) |
Gadgit | Yea it's the one I followed if you just go for the plug its ok just dont touch anything elce metal the plug is easy to get to |
Aja | I'm going to buy one and build it for my husband for Christmas. Honestly we can't afford a big screen right now. I've gotten alot of good ideas on how to improve the quality. So, the room has to be dark.. hey no problem, we'll put it in the basement. Plus we purchased the home theater dvd surround sound system. So, this will actually turn out nice! People have some imagination!! |
Socks | Ah, yes... Mike Q... another fresnel lens TV supporter who is "impressed" (geez, at least change the lingo, guys!). Don't get me wrong - No problem with that he likes it, but then he has to say "what is 20 BUCKS??? come on now, as opposed to 2,000-6,000 dollars?" It's always back to that penny-ante cardboard TV can match up to a $1,000+ LCD system. Then he says "get real". Is anybody really fooled by now? I now also own an LCD projector. No way you are going to get that quality for $20 or less. Sorry, that's life. And before you folks blast me for pointing that out, talk to guys like Mike Q who keep posting here making those ridiculous claims. |
Anonymous | Well, I tried building one over Thanskgiving Weekend. Took only 1 hour (including cutting cardboard and opening up TV. For those that wants to open up TV, you only need to switch 2 wires, not four. Bought the lense from ebay. First impression: Wow, it actually works. Second impression: F*ck, can't get it to focus at all. Third impression: at least I have over 100" music video on the all. Final thoughts: If you're planning to play DDR with it, it's a passing grade, but barely. If you're planning to play other games with it, look elsewhere. If you're planning to use it to watch Movies/TV, look elsewhere, focus is similar to people needs glasses but don't use them. If you're planning to do light shows with it, go for it, as it doesn't require any major focus. If you're planning to watch anime with it, better get it dubbed as there's no way to read subtitles. If you're planning to watch cartoons with it, that's a iffy. I'm gonna buy the Meniscus lens and see if there's any improvement. So stay tuned. Ryu Masterloc. |
Gadgit | You will definitly get a better image with a meniscus lens others in the group I am in are trying to get a hold of 180mm 500mm focal lenght lenses these sould be the ones that give us the most light output. The set up of your box might have been a bit out you should be able to get some sort of picture from a fresnel it's not the best but normaly viewable |
| i just got a meniscus lens ?(cant remember right now ill tell youi after i find the packaging for it) 250MM but anyways will that work for my 13"tv thats inverted and upside down (wires have been played with :D so it sits upright but is flipped and flipped again)cuz its a wood box that i stuck my lil tv into and i could get into it easy enough but its quite annoying when i tried it earlier and found that i should see if that lens will work cuz if it will :D :D :D :D :D :D HALO ON XBOX ALLLL NIGHT and you can call it a cardboard box (or wood box in this case) but it works for me now the new lens should work better. |
| A couple of years ago I started messing around with home-made projection tv's. I hadn't ever heard of anyone else doing anything like it, and I haven't schecked out anything on-line until a few weeks ago.... Well, the way I got started was I was sitting around bored one day, when I realized that my 5" black and white tv was the perfect size for the projection lenses I got out of one of those old gigantic projection tv's. The tv I got my lens from had gotten a foot put through the screen and mirror, and had damage done to the circuit board, so I scrapped the lenses out of it. The lenses were a set of three cylindrical plastic cases made up of five or six various concave and convex lenses. Well, I made a primitive projection with one of those lens cases and the five inch black and white tv. It was black and white, of course, and quite unfocused, but it WAS neat to look at. While messing around with this system, one of my lens cases rolled off a table and hit the floor, breaking apart. One of those lenses I got out of the case happened to be perfect for projecting. Using that lens and a newer 13" color t.v., I made a pretty decent projector, probably very similar to the ones others built, if they knew what they were doing. With the color, contrast, and brightness turned up high, I got a pretty vivid picture, and the focus was much better than the black and white unit. But a while back, I loaned the tv out. The guy I loaned it to went to jail and he had someone bring the 13'' tv to him. Someone ended up smashing the tv. A few weeks ago I decided to check out the internet to see if anyone else had done anything like what I've done, and that's when I found out about the freznel lens method. So I went to Office Depot and got a lens for about seven dollars. I used the lens to project an image off a 19'' color tv. With a little bit of tinkering, tweaking, and fine-tuning, I ended up with a projection comparable to my 13''one. I would say it was not as quite as good, but close (though it is hard to tell without a side-by-side comparison), so I decided it wasn't worth taking my tv apart and re-wiring it. Anyhow, last week Wal-Mart had a sale from 6 to 11am, and in that sale they had a 20'' flat tv going for $100. I bought the tv and stuck it in the box I mad for my 19'' tv. And WOW. The washout factor is reduced by a good 50-70% and the focus is perfect. For an investment of less than 110 dollars, I am very happy with the picture. I just thought I'd share my experiences with those who are working on their own home-made projection tv. If you have any questions, feel free to email me, or leave a message here. Also, my brother built one using a much different method and he has a picture with 100% perfect focus, and similar brightness to the method mentioned here and he invested only a little over $100 as well. If you want to hear about it, ask me and maybe I'll be able to get him to tell you about it, or I can give you my account if he doesn't feel like it. Later.... |
Anonymous | Heheh... This damn message string is so long it gave me a serious headache, and I have now fortunately decided to save myself further headache by not even trying this out. I was never that unhappy with my 25" |
Anonymous | Ha this thread is fun - a lot of crap from both sides although a few people have called it right - it is a fun project , noway near lcd projector standard (dim blurry focus issues etc), but worth a couple of bucks and an hour or so of your time. Id say if you are interested and can get the lens cheap from a office store , do it but if you have to pay 10 bucks from a misrepresentative internet site forget it, these guys dont care about you or your enjoyment. this is the best thread out there on the 'incredible 100" tv - well done |
Anonymous | RE: Anonymous Ditto for being happy with presently-owned tv |
| I came to this site trying to figure out if it is worth my time and effort to try this. Without b*tching at me can anyone honestly answer my questions. Does using two lens work? OBVIOUSLY it doesn't compare to a "Real BSTV" I don't expect it too. But is decent enough to watch occasionally for sporting events and maybe PS2 gaming. Can someone out there give me an honest answer??? I thought about doing Shuram Gudatetris' idea with the 20" flat screen from Wal-Mart. I have gathered that a flat screen is better to use. PLEASE HELP!!!! Email or post here if you can!!!! |
Anonymous | Yes, im glad you are enjoying your 2,000 lcd projector, stop criticising people because you realize you made a foolish purchase or maybe not. Some people like myself dont want to spend that. I am not a salesmen, im giving my honest imput on the one I bought. I cant get enough of it, I've got friends and family over every day playing xbox on it or watchig movies, its working THAT DAMN good for me. So yes, for the little money I spent, you can sit at home watching your lcd and dont forgot to make next months payment on it. hope you got a good APR rate. Until then, im lovin mine!!! |
Minnesota | I am going to use a TV and Not the LCD and projector. So I need info on that way!! |
Anonymous | Instead of Buying the plans, realize that all the plans will be basically the same. Why not just try a free plan? Free 100 inch projection Plan Free 100 inch projection Plans.. Turn a Monitor into a 30" What you guys think of LaserX? It promises a 100 inch projection, that is bright, and not dim? |
Motley | Anonymous -- Don't hate. Those of us who have done so bought LCD simply because we can afford it. We don't need to "criticize" you or anyone else who prefers cardboard TV. For the 1,000th time, WHY WOULD ANYONE CARE WHAT YOU WATCH? What's with all this fresnel lens hostility? I think someone labled it as "sour grapes" and I agree. Secondly, I believe LaserX is simply another fancy schmancy scam site. Download the plans for free in this thread and build your own system. Or, how about this? Just send me $20 and I'll e-mail to you the "secret" plans which I will copy from this very thread. What the hell? If you guys are still in dought and willing to throw money away, I may as well get a piece of the action. Finally, why does common sense take a vacation on this board? OK, so there are those who can't afford more or simply love their fresnel lens TV. Fine. No argument there. But, there have been a series of tough questions posed on this board that have not gotten answers. For instance, what about that you can't get enough light out of a fresnel TV for a strong picture? How about the focus problem? Discoloration of the image? Etc. The only responses I see to the tough questions are "I don't care about that stuff" to put-downs of LCD owners. And then there are the dubious accolates of "IT REALLY WORKS! I WAS IMPRESSED!" Here is a tough question that I'll bet Anonymous can't answer. If cardboard TV REALLY worked as well as he claims, why hasn't the fresnel lens run LCD projector manufacturers out of business? |
Motley | Uh, in the above msg, I meant to type "doubt", not "dought", though phonetically I suppose I am more or less correct! |
| STOP THE B*TCHING AND HELP A GUY OUT!!!!! Listen MOTLEY and Anonymous. All I want are a few simple answers. I'm sure the LCD thing works great, I would do that if I had the money. Simple fact I don't. IS IT WORTH MY TIME WITH THE TV AND CARDBOARD??? That is all I want to know. I understand that this is the third best option. But can someone just answer the question DIRECTLY. Type it on the screen and give MINNESOTA an answer, I know it's tough, but you can DO IT!!!! |
Motley | Minnesota - if you scroll up, you'll see where I answered your question in great detail. I tried the fresnel lens thing and my review of it was my first post on this thread. In my opinion, it's not worth the time, effort or money even at $20. In my posts I explain why and ask specific questions (left unanswered) to those who disagree. HOWEVER (before the fresnel lens faction here throws a hissy fit), IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY AND IF FRESNEL LENS TV IS YOUR ONLY OPTION DO IT! But, don't support a scam site - get the "plans" for free, which you can simply download from this thread. That way, if you don't like it, you've spent only a pittance (especially if money is an issue) and you won't feel "gotten", even at $20. And don't expect a cardboard system to match up in any way to an LCD as the scam ads claim. IT DOESN'T - END OF STORY. I'm not down on the fresnel system. However, IF I were going to build there are better ways to to it. Scroll up through this thread for plans. Personally, I like the overhead projector platen idea. At least that way, you get strong light and a system DESIGNED to throw an image. That's the problem with fresel lens TV...televisions aren't projectors, so how can they throw strong, sharp images onto a screen? So, Minnesota, there you have it. In my opion, if you want a fun project with simply OK results, go for it. BUT if you want a kick-butt serious home theater that you will be proud to show friends and family, don't do it. Explore other options. I tried the fresel system, so I have experience. Hay, even though I can afford an LCD, do you honestly think I would have spent the money if I could get the same results for $20 or less? You are going to get what you pay for. In my opinion, if you invest $20 or less, don't expect more $20 results. Ain't no such thing as a free lunch. So, Minnesota, there it is straight up, take it or leave it. |
Motley | Minnesota - you will want to scroll up to check out my Aug. 24, 2003 post. That's my first one and about as direct an answer on this subject as you will get. Then scroll down and check out some of the subsequent questions from a technical slant that I (and others like Socks, Bustin Bob, Green Hornet, etc.) ask the fresnel lens supporters that remain unanswered to this day. Then you be the judge. |
| Thanks for your info Motley I appreciate it greatly. I would try the LCD thing, but am not that technically sound. So for a small investment I really can't afford to take the chance. I really don't expect that much but if it is decent I would be happy. Do you think using a flat screen would work a little better? Again THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! |
Motley | If you get the plans free and invest only a few dollars in the lens, even if you don't like the way it turns out, so what? Some of the fresnel lens fans say a flat screen TV works better as far as getting the edges to focus. One of the posters, Gadgit, says if you order a $6 meniscus lens (he suppies a link to the site to do so) it will increase video quality more than a fresnel lens. Good luck! Hope you're happy with what you end up with. If not, all you've invested is a little time and duct tape. |
Money | Wait...as soon as I hit "send" I considered that you actually don't want to BUILD a cardboard big screen TV. If I understand - you want to buy one ready made. (Do the scam sites even sell them that way? All I got was a xeroxed booklet of plans and a fresnel lens.) Anyway, only thing I can advise in that case is send in your $20 and keep your fingers crossed. If ALL you can do is buy one of these contraptions, what can anyone say but not to get your hopes way up in case you end up dissapointed in your big screen image? Think of the $20 you send in as if you went to a casino with it...don't gamble money you aren't prepared to lose. Again, good luck! |
| Motley/Money I plan to build one. Not buy one although I did actually find a site where you can buy one for $129.00 Although I don't remember where for sure, but I thought it was a link off of this page. I bought a fresnel lens for $2.99 off of ebay, because I didn't think you could just buy them in a store. I now have heard you can get them at office supply stores. Also why paint the inside black when it absorbs light??? I am going to experiment when I get my lens, but I thought painting it silver or white would increase the brightness although there may be a washout factor. Thanks Again for keeping me informed. |
| Hey Motley/Money The link for the pre-built project is posted under mike q's Monday, December 01, 2003 - 01:05 am post. Here is the link http://www.pacepic.com/projector/ I know you won't buy it, but I thought you would like to see the website!!! Looks ok, but I'll build my own. |
Anonymous | I personally don't like the people who own commercial LCD projectors, who come on this site to rubbish the idea of creating their own DIY projectors. It's fine that you have the money to purchase your own projector (By the way i have that sort of money, however i refuse to spend it on a projector) But please leave forums like these for those people who are building a projector to share ideas and tips. I currently run a site for people who want to achieve thier own DIY projector at www.projectiontv.co.uk however i am not a con artist and i explain fully what you can expect to achieve. I am the first to say that the the tv projector isn't the greatest and it does have its drawbacks, however I have also sold lots of lenses to people worldwide and all of them are happy with them, i have not received one complaint. I have built my own LCD projector, which i have recently upgraded to a 1024 x 768 LCD screen, and 2500 lumen metal hallide bulb, and now i have got a picture that is better than most commercial LCD projectors and it all cost me £220 ($384) that includes a motorised screen that was purchased off ebay. My projector can be used during the day and night , and unlike commercial projectors, when my bulb expires after 2000 hours it only costs me £11.68 to replace and not £300 - £400 like all other projectors. Don't let people who haven't tried to build a projector, or people who dont understand optics put you off, because both types of projectors can be made and the picture can be made acceptable. If you want to use forums that provide real help, and not just flames then visit discussion.projectiontv.co.uk I will help personally with all problems when people have purchased a lens from me, because i have web hosting costs etc.. and the £5.99 per lens that i charge is not just for the lens but the price includes full technical support and access to the forums. and for those who haven't purchased a lens from the site are still welcome to post however i will not reply personally to your posts as a priority unless i have free time to respond, however i am sure some of my existing members will be happy to help. Regards Stuart Buchanan www.projectiontv.co.uk |

Go to Sam's Club (US) and purchase their Epson LCD Data Projector ($950), go to the fabric store and purchase some blackout cloth (good gain for $10 - $15), keep the runs between your DVD/VCR/Tuner short and good quality cables, and enjoy your 72" screen. With DVD (SVideo) you can go larger, but with Cable/VCR 72" is likely your limit for quality. $10 is not much for you, but for these weisenheimers $10 times 1000 people is too much. Forget "instant gratification," instead save up and you can have good quality for a much lower price than most systems sold out there. If you play the DVD from your laptop/PC the quality is high also. |

New member Username: MotleyPost Number: 1 Registered: 12-2003 | Stuart -- you, like others, demonstrate the curious hostility towards people who own LCD. The only difference is that you in particular actually run one of these fancy fresnel lens scam sites that I have been crabbing about for months. No wonder you want people like me out of this forum. Go back and read this thread. I and other LCD owners are very diplomatic and respectful of those who choose to build their own even at $10. The LCD owners have been pointing out that it is the fresnel lens faction who is choosing to "divide" on this forum by calling names and generally criticizing. Everyone has a right to post messages here. But, now that I've gotten all that off my chest... I checked out your site, which is one where fresnel lenses can be ordered. Fine enough. And the plans you post (which you offer for free, who'd a thunk?) are the same variety to be found on this site for CARDBOARD TV. So, in your post above you say you upgraded to a system which uses a 2500 lumen metal halide bulb. This upgraded system you speak of is clearly a different projector than the fresnel lens system you advertise. But, at first reading, your post makes the fresnel system and the one you say you "upgraded" to seem the same. An uneducated buyer might quickly skim your msg, zero in on phrases like "my projector can be used day or night", then get sucked in. So, call me divisive if I point stuff like that out. But, shining a light through the fog is not argumentative, but informative. The buyer can then make his or own educated decision. What's wrong with that? But, then I suspect that you will argue with my reasoning. A scam site vendor checking into police a message board that criticizes scam sites is kind of like a fox trying to guard the hen house. |

Unregistered guest | Got mine a few days ago, (off eBay) $14.95AU, i built it, using wood, and the fresnle lens, so no turning the monitor upside down and i have a pure flat 19" monitor works extremely well great for games and movies not web browsing tho, my room is always dark coz its only got one little window (granny flat) so i use it all the time, its well worth it, and its also very fun to build. i impresed my friends playing Halo the size of the wall (turn brightness and contast up fully) with my surround sound speaker (wall mounted) and subwoofer (logitech Z-640's) So all up i would give it 9/10 and its worth it if you got the right stuff. |
