Sam J,

Looks like it's down to the hlp5685 (or hlp5674) vs the JVC HD-52Z575 HD-ILA. If they are roughly the same price (say bargain hunting, whatever) and you can not trust what you see in a stores, how are you going to compare? I don't think I can trust what I see in stores because of different picture calibrations. The only reason I can see buying the JVC is cost, but then there is the stand which costs ~400 (same for the 74). Confused. - Jim B

I have looked at all the sets except toshiba and I justed purchased the Mitsubisihi MD52525. Before the glare fest posts start let me explain why I think it is the best set right now.

Samsung 5085

pros
A- PQ
4th gen dlp HD2+

cons
Stupid base, were do I put the rest of my toys?

Samsung 5063

pros
B+ PQ
fits on my tv stand
price

cons
HD3 chip and PQ

JVC

pros
A+ PQ
nice packaging ie tv looks good
standard sound is good

cons
LCoS still too new?
limited inputs
JVC? If Phillips and Toshiba had trouble with LCoS how can JVC do it?

Mits MD52525

pros
a+ PQ
cable card and HD tuner
input options
brand name

Cons
Stupid screen

The room I'm putting the tv in is dark but I bet I have to remove the screen. While at Tweeter I had them remove the screen to make sure the PQ was still the same and it was. I'm told a new screen will be out for the 52525 in Oct but even if it is I'm not sure why I need one in the first place. For those of you who are about to buy a set I recommend looking at the JVC and the Mits. The JVC surprised me the most since all the other LCoS sets I have seen look crappy. The set will be delivered tomorrow and I should have HD cable in a week. I'll post an update once I have had a chance to test it out.

if I have the correct information, looks like intel also delayed their lcos. also JVC's lcos is not really lcos something proprietary (something similar).

what is the purpuse of the screen on the Mits MD52525 which you removed? do I have to worry about people touching the screen? - Jim B.

also the cable card is only 1 direction. but the hd tuner would be nice.

Jim,

The screen is designed to protect the main screen from damage, but it can add a lot of glare in rooms with sunlight. It is easy to remove and the set does not look goofy when it is off.

I currently owm a 35" Flat tube Mits and its been a great TV for 9 yrs. I've followed pricing on the internet stores for over a yr now. In mid -fall there was a substantial price break through the Holidays last season. Presently I can get the JVC at $2575 at 3 Five Star rated internet stores. Hoping to see $2300 to 2400 in the fall.
The HLP5674W was my dream machine, with the 4k+ intro pricing, I need to see if the audio sync problem has been fixed. For my needs the JVC has enough inputs. Waiting also to hear reports on the Mits.DLP. Will be buying by Nov. Keeping an open mind a waiting for futher reviews.

Reply to "anonymous", I just got one of the first HLP-6163's, and almost freaked out because it was an inch taller than the specs, and the cabinet was already built. Turns out that the base (foot) on the unit is 1" tall and sticks out about 2" from the front, which means it wouldn't be flush in a wall installation.

I asked Tweeter to see if the base could be removed, and they didn't think so, but they hadn't seen one before themselves. They turned it over and took out some screws and it did come off. It's meant for more stability for a table-top setting. The TV is even more narrow from front to back compared to the preceding model, so it may be a little tipsy without the wider foot. The base looked like it was part of the unit -- same material & color -- but it comes off. Still, the bezel flares outward 1/2" to 3/4" at the bottom, so it will not be a perfectly flush installation in the wall. The main screen will have to set back that far so the flared bottom of the bezel is flush. It's not installed yet, so I don't know how it performs.

My impression is that screen size is as important, if not more important, to contrast as the contrast ratio. Each step up in screen size means slightly less contrast for some reason. The blacks aren't quite as intense. Anyone else notice this? The mid-size screens are probably the optimum. But I wanted the big one anyway.

Anonymous: Re: Your new JVC 52". Firstly, thanks for the response a few days ago about the purchase of your tv in Waterloo. I live in Barrie but the travel is still doable if needed. I've been researching the technology (Lcos), pretty new stuff, really. The question I have for you is does the tv have DVI output? I understand it has HDMI and HDCP, which prevents copying stuff from what I understand. Bell has recently come out with a DVI output reciever. (no cable in the country) Digital connections are key from what I read. Thanks.

Sammy HLP 5085W vs Mits HD52525
I am also torn between these 2 sets. I like the Mitsubishi but the screen has to be removed with all the reflections and it only has one HDMI digital input. The picture detail is insane on this set. I saw it side by side with the Sony 60" XBR and the Sammy HLP 5065. You could see freckles on the face where the other 2 sets showed none. The Samsung has that stupid pedistal but a great look otherwise and the set has tremendous black levels and color. It also has DVI and HDMI Digital inputs. I think the Mits had to be set to 70% of the color slide to get near the Sammy at 50%. The Sammy is also 2" smaller and $200 more. Any input from current owners of either set would be great. I am using a Samsung SIRT360 receiver with Directv.

Thanks.

On my HLP6163, I've noticed on certain brighter programs that on both the left and rights sides of the screen, there appears to be dark sploches. We have tried cleaning the screen thinking it was just on the screen but it is still there. Now, although it doesn't show up on everything, when it does, it's really annoying. Has anyone else had this issue with their Samsung?

Thanks!

Jake the Dog,

My Mits was delivered on Saturday and I'm happy with the pq but I might have to exchange the set. As soon as we powered the set up I noticed two small black spots near the top of the screen. They are present during tv and dvd playback so I'm sure it is a TV problem. I called Tweeter and they are sending a person out Wednesday, if they can not fix it they will give me a new set. Please review my 8/20 post for my thoughts on all the sets out now, and please check out the JVC before you buy. This problem with my Mits has me wondering if I should have gone with the JVC, I hope Tweeter comes through for me. By the way, I thought I would have to remove the stupid screen but so far I have not had a glare problem. Removing it is easy so if I have to it is no big deal. I'll send an update once they come out and fix/replace the tv.

Jamie,

That is not good news. It is probably shipping damage. I have also dealt with Tweeter and though I love them, BB keeps making me offers I can't refuse. They matched Tweeters 10% off sale even after it was over and are offering a free portable DVD player this week. I am really leaning toward the HLP 5085W at this point but will go try them both again before I commit. It is a lot of money not to be sure. My last set was a 35" Mits with the Corian top 6 years ago.

I HAVE A JVC 52 INCH AND THE TV IS GREAT. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS IN WIDESCREEN DVD. THE BLACK BARS ON TOP AND BOTTOM WERE BIGGER ON THE LEFT SIDE THAN THE RIGHT. THIS GAVE THE PICTURE A CROOKED LOOK. I GOT A REPLACEMENT ON SATURDAY AND IT TO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. NOT AS BAD AS THE FIRST, THIS ONE IS ONLY A PIXEL OR TWO OFF. OTHER THAN THAT THIS TV IS AWESOME AND WILL BE KEEPING IT UNLESS THE SAMSUNG BLOWS ME AWAY. I BOUGHT THE JVC FOR 3559 CANADIAN SO THE SMASUNG WOULD HAVE TO KICK BUTT FOT ANOTHER 1500 DOLLARS

LAMP PROBLEMS? We purchased the Samsung HLP5063 and had a wall unit built around it. There is vent low on one side and a large one on the top. We have only had this TV up and running for about three weeks. Now the set will not turn on...the lamp light flashes but tv will not turn on. Has anyone else had this problem. We know that they require proper ventilation, but what's considered proper ventilation.

Anonymous regarding JVC position problem: My RCA DLP has an adjustment feature on one of the on screen menus where you can adjust vert and horz position. Have you looked?

Anonymous

NO I AM USING COMPONENT CABLES. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY ADJUSTMENT IN THE MENU. THIS IS A PROBLEM ONLY ON ONE SIDE OF THE SCREEN. I DO NOT THINK YOU COULD RAISE ONE SIDE OF THE SCREEN. THE PICTURE ON THIS TV IS AWESOME. IF SOMEBODY KNOWS HOW TO ADJUST PLEASE LET ME KNOW. AND I AM NOT ANONYMOUS JUST QUICKER THAT WAY.

I pulled the trigger today on the Sammy HLP 5085W. I went to BB again to view the Mits 52" 52525 and the Sammy HLP 5085W side by side. They had actually moved the Sammy right next to the Mits. On the same source and a neutral setting (I did this manually to ensure I was comparing apples to apples), the Sammy looked to have better color saturation and more varied degrees of color. The Mits looked to have a slightly more defined picture. I asked about the glare shield and was told it DOES help with the contrast level of the set as it is tinted. I want to connect 2 digital sources so I picked the Sammy as it has DVI and HDMI inputs, and knowing I would lose contrast on the Mits as I have a window opposite the wall the set will be on and would have to remove the Diamondshield. The Sammy gets delivered on Saturday. I'll keep you posted.

Jake the Doggy, congrats on your new HDTV!!!

I am still debating on whether to follow your lead & buy the 5085W or wait for the new Samsung with the xHD3 1080p DLP chip, supposedly out either late this year or early next.

But the more I debate & wait the harder it gets for me, as I have a growing DVD collection & haven't been able to enjoy them since my set is an old 89 Sony Trinitron with bad picture & I have a Dolby pro-Logic system with 2 surround speakers, so I'm not able to enjoy & take advanatge of the DVDs & Xbox Video Games with features like DTS-EX, 5.1 or higher surround sound & HD resolutions.Arghhhhh!

Jake when you receive your set, It would be kool if you could come back & post your impressions of it in a new thread, b/c this one is getting way too long to read & keep up with.

Samsung vs JVC
I was at Best Buy and the person mentioned that the JVC will require realigning/refocusing of the optics every two? years. Is This True? Cost? He mentioned this is true for any tv which is relying on convergence for a final picture. In addition the bulb cost about the same as the Samsung bulb. Also he mentioned I need to purchase a stand, which I already knew.

I have tried every which way to see rainbow effects, the person at Ultimate electronics mentioned on the 85 Samsung's that the wheel spins even faster (now at 10K? rpm) so it is even harder to see rainbow effects.

Sync issues? Screen door effect? yet to be seen, but I will try again.

Here is a forum with a whole list of problems with the JVC HD-ILA. Some look like a learning curve but there are some other problems which raise some concern.

This must be the tenth time I have seen someone referenced the AVS forum.

Also check this page, another issue with the JVC.

I should mention that not everyone thinks the issue is with the JVC. Has anyone noticed these problems with the Samsung? please I need to know as I need to buy a TV in the next two-three weeks.

Quote:
The only semi-major problem I have with the set is the "shimmering" effect. I was watching a scene in the clone factory in Star Wars AOTC, and when the screen panned from right to left, with the white clone factory against the black background, the pan was VERY jumpy. I have noticed this a little bit on other movement too (when people in the olympics are moving their arms very fast) but it happens a lot on panning of landscapes.
4) Chromatic abberation. I have this pretty badly... about two pixels on the left side of my set, and about one pixel on the right side of my set... green pushed left, and magenta pushed right

As for the Best Buy rep forcasting future realignment/focusing repairs, keep in mind they make a mint selling service contracts. I called the JVC tech support # and they said short of a component failure this should not be an issue. Who to believe, who knows?

HLP5674W NEWS: DON'T BUY IT!!!!
I have been waiting like many for this unit. I just spoke with the production side of Samsung and was told it is NOT IN PRODUCTION!! The POSSIBILTY that it will be in the market at all is remote and will in NO WAY be available this year. They 90 series however is in the production line and is scheduled to be released in January 2005 if not before.
So if you dont want to wait til then pick the 85 series with the stand to get the best they got now. If you can wait you might want to save your fun money as the 90 series is reportedly gonna be quite abit deeper into your pockets or bras or wherever you keep your fun money.

Good Luck. As for me, I am stuck with a built in and cant use a pedestal mount so I must wait for the 90 to be released.

Yes, the 90 series will utilize the xhd3 chip. Here is a good site for the info too. I know a 61 and a 70 are coming but don't know about smaller ones. They will also have the atsc tuners built-in for those of us who use open air local hdtv.

Actually best buy and CC are only carrying the hlp5085w for now perhaps in the future one can order the hlp5685w. Ultimate electronics said they could special order one for me, but still have not decided which way to go. Looks like its come down to about $600 saving on the JVC. But just on sure if the tv is worth the risk. The 85 already was a risk for me.

2" thinner, .1" smaller in height and width, $1500+ you get to keep, picture quality most say is as good as, I say better than the Samsung, and it will fit perfectly into that new entertainment center. Go JVC Steve!

I've been tracking 50" sets in Vancouver for a few weeks and was about to pull the trigger on the Sammy 5063 but with the Sony GrandWega at 3999 with stand for the 2005 model, it seems to good to pass up. Some questions though:
1. Is the Sony KF50WE620 feature comparable with the Samsung HLP5063? (besides the Samsung is DLP and the Sony is LCD)
2. What did they improve on the Sony KF50WE620 over last years KF50WE610?
3. Finally, is the extended warrantly worth it? Normally I would never buy this (scam), but with these sets, it seems they're prone to some problems. One rep told me the LCD is more reliable than DLP. Thoughts?
Any help appreicated,

WM

Hey Anonymous, where did you get the JVC 52" D-ILA for $3559 in Canada? If you can get it for that, it would be about $1000 better than any set I can find, including the JVC.

Hey, I just went to BB and checked out the JVC. Clay face all over the place. I bought the 5085. Told them CC was selling for $3800 plus free financing and they gave it to me for $3700 with free financing. I'm going to keep my eye out to make sure it doesn't go cheaper, but this is not a bad deal. Certainly not $3200, but I didn't have a $500 package to negotiate with. I wish it didn't have the pedestal, but it's the best technology available and I'm tired of waiting for the 5674 (if it's even going to be available). My plan is to custom build a wrap around stand to disguise the pedestal and house my components. I wouldn't give the JVC another look though. The Stepford Wives were on and everyone, men and women, all had mush faces. This is a result of up-resing the signal, similar to taking a jpg in Photoshop and blowing it up 500%... it doesn't work ot very well. Toshiba didn't beat Sam either. Very bitmapped in comparison.

Hey,I guess we are all entitled to our own opinion! The half dozen or so JVC units I've viewed so far have had outstanding skintone qualities with sharp details, possibly a bad signal source.

Does anyone have an opinion on how the samsung
hlp5085 compares to the Toshiba 52hm84? they both
use the HD2+ DLP chip does it come down to Samsung Cinema Smooth technology -vs- Toshiba PixelPure Digital Video Processing Suite? Has anyone compared the two?

Unregistered guest
Adam S, if the set is good, I want one. Hook me up dude! I would like to go to FutureShop to see one in action just to know what I'm getting though. How long does FutureShop extend the warranty for?

Unregistered guest
SeeSponge, you know they make a custom stand that wraps around the HLP5085W right? It's made with a big triangle wedge in the front so that you can slip in the pedestal nicely.

I would like a Sammy 5085, but the price is a bit high for me now.

J Elsmore, I haven't seen the Toshiba yet, but one of my local dealer's is going to have one in at the end of the week and I'm going to take a look at it. Oh btw, this is Toshiba's first year in the DLP territory, so hopefully it's a smokin year cause they usually have good sets, but it's something to stay "aware" of since it is year 1.

Most of the "new models" from the reputable names are carrying the HD2+ chips in them this season, such as Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, but I would probably say the Samsung would be one of the better ones.

Unregistered guest
Ok Adam S, I saw you say you got the JVC 52Z585 black model and the 5 year warranty. How is your present impression after having it for about a week? How about those black bars with the widescreen movie? Were you able to adjust it any better?

I was just on pricegrabber.com and it listed the JVC as a DLP.. hehe that's very misleading.

I'm leaning very close to the JVC D-ILA now but I heard of the problem of the HDMI and not being able to hook up a computer to it, which is a very strong selling point for me.

Adam S, you said you might return it for the Samsung HLP5085W, but I haven't seen it available, especially at FutureShop. How did you plan to return it for the Sammy? Just take it back after FutureShop gets the Sammy or return and get the Sammy someplace else? How long can you take before returning the JVC?

So many decisions.. it's warping my brain :D

Anonymous

I am pretty sure you can hook it up to a computer. I traded my first one in for another and the black bars are better but not perfect. I can live with the black bars. Every single person who sees my tv loves it, So that should tell you something. No clayfaces, the fan is a little loud but if the tv was perfect I am sure it would of cost me another 10000 dollars. Great Tv for the money. Have not seen the hlp in Canada yet, I assume this week. I have until Sept 19 to switch. I doubt I will.

I have waited patiently for the 5674. But all of this talk about the JVC has me curious. I originally decided to go with DLP because of 2 things. One was the best for console games (XBOX)(better than plasma) and the second...no burn in on the screen. How the the JVC compare to DLP in these areas? Also, what is the difference between the 52z575 and 52z585?

52z575 = Silver, and 52z585 = Black :-)
Those are the only differences seeing as how the MSRP is the same on JVC's site. They seem to do that just like with the DVD player I got from them.

The D-ILA just has HDMI, it does not have DVI, but you can get a converter supposedly. I have heard of people have problems with the HDMI connector though on the JVC.

My new 52" Mits 52525 was delivered a week ago and I am very happy with my choice. I was tired of waiting for the 5674 and bought Mits at Tweeter. My opinion is the Mits has the best PQ of all the sets out now, I have not seen the Toshiba, and I like all the extra features it comes with. I will admit that if it is very sunny I have some glare from the stupid front screen, but I can take it off if it starts to bug me. When the set was first delivered it had two small black triangles on the top of the set. Tweeter service came out and showed me the mirror bracket had moved during transit. They were willing to repair or replace the unit, I went with replace and the new, new set will be delivered next Saturday. Having watched several HD movies and Cub games all I can say is wow. If anyone would like more info on this set or has any questions please let me know I will answer them the best I can.

You are right Jamie, the Mit does have a nice picture. I saw it next to a sammy capt Kirk HLP5085W and actually thought it looked a little better.I was considering, but have heard that the Glare guard (Diamondsheild I think it is called)Can be reflective. So depending on the room it can be a problem. But good choice if it works for you.

Well, I made a decision...getting to close to Football season to wait anymore. I just ordered the JVC 61Z575. I had the order for the HLP5674W with HYPAUDIO.com. I called to cancel, they don't show the 61" JVC on their web site. The sales guy...Rob said to give him a minute. He came back and said he could get one shipped in 2 days. $3250.00. If he can pull this off he is my hero. And I will send any of you his way that are interested. The strange thing is...there are a lot of sites (NYC area) that all seem to be affiliated somehow. They will point you to the same phone number to call sales. So, I assumed he called a sister store and got one. another is HYPEAUDIO.COM (with an "e"). LGDSuperstore.com another. prices vary, so beware.

The JVC is a nice set, my only worried is about the LCoS since the earlier sets that used that technology were not very good. BTW, the Diamond shield pops off with a plastic putty knife.

I purchased a hlp-4663 along with a samsung dvd player with the dvi connection last week. I have the older directv tivo box. I have it connected to
the s-video port. All of the stations look terrible! There is lots of shadows or ghosting effects around images and especially around text.
I also hooked up the dvd player using the dvi input with a "monster cable" and I still get the shadowing (allthough not as bad). Ive tried using the component inputs as well..same thing. Ive already returned it and got a new one with the same results.
Does this thing require HDTV to look clear?
Please help!!

Fry's Electronics has the Sammy 5085 for $3395. That is the on the floor price. The salesman told me they have some "wiggle room" on it an they will also match Best Buys gift card special, and match the reward zone too. That drops the price to just above 3k.

I posted this seperately on the forum as TMSKILZ requested but nobody replied. I finally got the Samsung Monday. I originally got a new Sony 50" LCD at BB as it was on sale for $2399. Too good to pass up. I also got a Samsung Sirt-S360 HD Receiver. After a week of Olympics, I decided I wanted a better contrast ratio on my HD set. I checked 4 stores and narrowed it down to the Samsung and the Mitsubishi 52525. Yes I saw the Toshiba and it looked nice but I have never been fond of them. I set both sets to "Neutral" settings and picked the Sammy due to what I viewed as richer color, a DVI and a HDMI input, and lack of glare on the screen. BB aplied a competitors 10% off coupon and the great TV swap was set for Sun 8-22. The delivery CO never showed up so Mon I called and Tue I went to BB to cancel the whole order. I was quite upset. BB offered me $500 to not cancel the order and threw in a free mini dvd player that was on promo. The swap was re-set to Sat 8-28. The delivery company missed their window and I was told no set Sat, maybe Sun but likely not until Mon. I called BB and they gave me another $125 off for all my grief. Sun was a no go so I got it yesterday at lunch time. The set had 2 stuck mirrors at first but by the end of the night all were functioning fine. SD images are quite mushy but I got this for HD. HD images are incredible. My dvd player through composite inputs looks almost HD. Overall I am quite happy with my choice and hope the stuck mirrors do not return. After all the grief and discounts the set cost me $3075. BB is great on the customer service and I am once again happy. Has anyone else had stuck mirrors and did they clear themselves up?

Does anyone actually own a 5674w yet?

I'm among the frustrated... I bought a new home, and have been waiting all summer...

What ever happened to Garrett and LetsGoDigital?

Hello. Only the 46 inch Sam DLP will fit in my cabinet with 52-inch max width. I read on some mail order sites that the 46 inch is "third gen" of the Sam DLP's. Anybody able to post a review or info on whether this set had any improvements over the initial production of Sam DLP's?

Anyone else want to chime in? I have seen yes and no for the extended (expensive) warranty on the Sammy HLP4663. My major concern is the brownouts that occur where I live. Is a surge protector with UPS sufficient to protect the TV? $500 for 4 years is sttep.

These are my inputs for the Sammy HLP's Series. Personally, I owned the HLP4663W and I love it. If you're buying the HLP Series for HD programming or DVD viewing, you will love it, but if you're watching SD signal, it's very grainy and you'll be disappointed. In SD signal the picture quality is grainy like any rear projection TV. About the improvements of the HLP compared to previous Sammy HLM & HLN series, the contrast is much better. First of all the HLP is 7 colors wheel and spinning at higher RPM and contrast 1500:1, while the HLN series only have 6 colors wheels and contrast is only 1000:1. I didn't look at the HLM series since it's the 1st generation. HLP also have other improvements, like HDMI interface, a better remote (but still not good enough for a 3K TV), smaller size (depth), etc.. I hope this will help those looking at the HLP Series.

Solidatt -

I've heard this before. It's like talking to Sprint PCS reps - they all say a different thing. The last word from Steve Pasonian (head marketing rep) that the 74/77 series is ALIVE!! However, with no release date, I'm not saying you're wrong. Who knows about Samsung, they seem to be losing their edge on the DLP market very fast! The Mitsu 525 (and 725 series to come) look to be a step above all!!

Here's my problem - I have a limited cabinet space above my fireplace, and wanted the 5674W for a few reasons... (1) it's the largest screen DLP I can fit in the space... (2) the thin bezel helps... (3) the HD2+ chip provided the higher contrast I need (this is in a gathering with windows all around, off the kitcken)... (4) DLPs are light enough at a 100 pounds not to collapes the shelf... and (5) the tabletop version is what I want...

Problems I had with other DLPs I saw were primarily focused on the problems with the speakers being "on the side"... the eat up too much horizontal space...

I'm completely open to suggestions, but at this point - it's starting to look like I'll have to get a plasma... argh...

Anonymous,

I was waiting for the 5674 too and I bought the Mits 52525. I think the picture is better than the 5085 and it would fit in above your fireplace. The only bad thing about the Mits is the shield they put on the front can cause glare. They are coming out with a replacement in October if it is a problem in your room, it is fine in mine. Additionally, you may want to look at the JVC LCos tv. I rated them 1 and 2 ahead of all the current Samsungs.

J.D.

BTW, the stupid shield on the Mits comes off very easily if you have glare problems.

Thanks Jamie...

Do anyone know the dimensions for the Mits 52825, or is it the same as the 52525...

What's the difference between the different Mits series... the website is kinda vague on the subject...

Is there any info on how much the "new" screen will cost?

Where can one find the Mits???

Thanks... this is a terrific forum...

Just got back from HH Gregg, CC, and BB... BB has the Mits 52525... all I can say is - Samsung, you blew it...

The featureson the Mits are absolutely superior... it has the cable card slot, and has a very nice set of features of front (for me, the compact flash is great as I do a lot of professional digital photography)... is has the built in tuner, and with the card slot you can kiss the cable box goodbye...

Another cool feature is the "lift" to non HDTV signals... the set actually "pumps up" the signal to make it more HDTV like...

The screen glare won't be an issue for me... I don't have any backlighting issues... though I will probably consider the new screen shield when it's available... the thing looks as good as Capt Kirk, and you get to lose the gaudy pole/stand...

I'm not completely sold on the 52525 though... the 52825 is the object of my desire because of the internal recorder...

Off to surf for the tube... Samsung really dropped the ball here... go check out the Mits...

More info:

52825 goes into production this month... release October... same as 52525, but it's got a 120gb PVR (personal video recorder)... also has the anti-glare shield... lastly, has high gloss black cabinet vice the existing 2 tone high gloss back bezel / plastic grey base in 52525...

Note - word on the street is that Samsung didn't get enough commercial interest this year for the 74 series... last year, they pursued them because they could get a premium on the sets... but no luck on that this year with so much competition...

This information was from Walts in Tempe, AZ who attended the recent 2004 show... no direct contact information from Samsung provided... BB said they haven't seen the Samsung rep in over a month, but they're going to query them on the 74 series... the 85 series is amazing, but the 63 series leaves a lot to be desired compared to the 85 and the Mits...

I think the Mits 52525 is a nice set but do not find it superior to the HLP 5085W in any way. There is only 1 pure digital input on the set. If you have cable at first this might seem to be OK. Unfortunately their card reader only goes 1 way so forget On Demand, Pay Per View etc. If you have Satellite, in the coming year when HI Def DVD is out or even now if you want an Up-converting Samsung DVD player and you want more than 1 connection you will be forced to use RGB Video which must be converted from pure digital. The set took a while to process commands when I was testing it out. It was far from quick when turning on, changing channels, or switching inputs. The detail level was great but the colors did not seem as vibrant as the Samsung, even after a lot of tweeking. I like the look of the Samsung on it's pedistal. To each their own. At least Samsung did not install an aptly named glare shield that not only seems to cause endless glare but also aids in the contrast ratio of the set as it is tinted. Check that out before removing it. The Salesman at Tweeter swore it was true and there is a tint to the shield. I have read in several threads where new owners of these sets said they came in with their lightsource tilted and in need of adjustment or replacement as well as a bug in the firmware that requires an upgrade via compact flash to fix. No set is perfect. Click the link below in this very forum if you think otherwise. Make an inmformed decision and be happy with it. Bashing the Samsung may help make you feel like you justified your purchase but If Samsung is settling known issues like these with the Mits BEFORE releasing their tabletop model then Kudos to them for getting it right, not dropping the ball and releasing their sets prematurely.

I also researched tv's for many months and the Texas Instruments line up is the hd3 (smallest chip) is for lower priced models, the hd2+ is the mid-sized and has better contrast, and the xhd3 will be the largest chip with 1080P as its native resolution (but not media to play). I chose the 5685 after close comparison with what else carries the same chipset (Mits, Panny) and are glad I got what I did.

Pretty lame that Samsug is using the Tantus in ad campaigns. Seems like they have no plans to ship them. I saw this in E-Gear magazine today.

Agree with many of the comments here... what aggravates everyone, I think, is the lame behavior of Samsung... are we getting this TV or not?!

My situation is unique... I don't want PPV, I don't have anything other than cable to plug into it (it's going in my gathering room, above the fireplace)... and I'm waiting for the 52825, which will have the anti-glare screen...

I have to have a tabletop... don't get me wrong - if Samsung would come clean and / or produce the 5674W, I'd be first there... but the aggravating wait, without end in sight, has left me looking elswhere... and I was impressed with the feautures that "work for me" (read above)... the compact flash card slot, for example, is right for me... all the inputs weren't (particular as they are to my specific need / installation)...

Good thread - learning a lot... appreciate all the input here...

P.s. - it doesn't make me feel any better to bash the Sammy... didn't think I was...

Hi,
I did not mean to offend you anonymous(s) but you basically gave the Mits 2 thumbs up and said it was far superior to the Sammy as they had missed the boat. I felt I had to defend the Sammy as I own the 5085W and went through what all of you are going through right now. I took delivery Monday. My wife hates the pedestal stand. I pointed out to her that we need flexability and we need a great TV. I don't know if this is "it" or not but it has the bases covered for our present and future needs. We originally got a Sony LCD. Nice TV! I liked every aspect of it except the contrast ratio and the detail level after seeing it next to the Mits and Sammy at Tweeter. If you did not set the thing up next to 4 other great TV's you would love it all day long. That being said, next to the Mits and Sammy, in our minds anyway, there was a clear lack of depth and definiton. Don't take what you see at a retail store for granted. Trust me. With a little fine tuning or de-tuning, these boys sell what they want or are getting incented to. I got chastized at BB for tuning the Sammy back to factory specs. Are the Demo TV's not for us to test drive? The Mits looked way better than the Sammy and I was flustered as I have seen both at "Neutral" settings and they are pretty darn close in the picture department. Utilizing the same exact chip will do that. I leaned to the Sammy for my personal preference of what I perceive to be bolder colors and no glare as there is a lot of light in our living room. My wife still likes the Mits better and it too would have been a great set. After closer inspection of the settings they had the Sammy set with the DNI off and the Digital Noise reduction off. The Mits was set with it picture modification setting on. You would never know to look for anything like that if you did not visit a forum like this. I am sure the retail guys are not happy we are spreading knowledge. I mean no disrespect to anyone. It is all personal preference. I just don't like to see one set getting rave reviews when it's peer albeit somewhat different but clearly in the same league is getting less than good reviews. Like you said, for your instance the Mits covered all your bases in spades. For mine, I had a gaping hole at second digital input. The beauty of DLP for me is digital in means digital out with no conversion to analog and back with data loss. Do your homework, test drive the sets, grab the remotes and play. Otherwise you may just believe your eyes. Good Luck Everyone.

I was about to buy the HLP4663W because when I went to BB and CC it was the recommendation from the Sales rep and it seemed the right price/performance combination. Why I am upgrading my TV? Because the HDTV DVR from Time Warner Cable in NYC is finally available.

When I was about to pay the $3199, TWC confirmed me that the DVI output was not enabled, and given that the sales rep mentioned a hundred times that the DVI input was essential for HDTV, I started researching all the different options.

Three questions?
1) Is the DVI vs Component cables a big difference?
2) When is the next generation of 46" DLP's available?
3) Any word on the not enable DVI ouput from TWC NYC?

Thanks

I can't wait for the HLP any longer (just moved this past weekend) does anyone own an HLN series TV? If so have any of you NOT had an audio/sync porblem or is it just a fact that if you buy an HLN there will be an audio/sync problem? Thx

1234,

Don't do it buddy! Stick with the HLP series , HLN have way too many issues, especially with Sync.

Unregistered guest
HLN Models:
Texas Instruments HD2 DLP chip
6-segment color wheel
1000:1 contrast ratio
1 DVI input?

HLP Models
Texas Instruments HD3 DLP chip
- this chip has the mirrors fashioned in a diamond configuration which
reduces the ability to see the individual pixels. If you look up-close at
an HLN next to an HLP you'll see a big difference in your ability to see
individual pixels
7-segment color wheel
- better color especially in some of the darker scenes
1500:1 contrast ratio
2 DVI inputs

HLN are last years models. HLP are 2004 models with some improvements.
The HLP4663w has the chip set HD3

You can go to http://www.samsungusa.com and get new brochure on 2004 DLP Models. Appears there will be a xx74 and xx77 but maybe not what we all thought it was (in light engine details).

Hey frustraters... ive followed this post since about late april, and I purchased the HLP5663, since I couldnt wait for the 85 series, and let me tell you that I am glad I just went ahead and bought it. Football on HD looks like im on the field, and if the 85 series is better somehow, i doubt you can really tell unless they are sitting next to each other, and you get extrememly picky.
My Xbox plays amazing with the HD cables and widescreen format... It has brought Madden to new levels of intensity among my friends.
Sync problems came up during certain commentary, but once i got the HD box and better cables (rather than simple coax feed from the wall to the antenna) There hasnt been an issue since.
DVD performance is ridiculous, and the sound with my pioneer home theater makes me never want to leave the house again.
My advice...
quit reading posts... do some research, find the one you like, and get the thing. Stop worrying. You will be happy with it as soon as you take it out of the box, and you will sleep easier once you just get it over with.

Does anyone know when the HLP6163s will be released. I still have not seen them at Best Buy or Circuit City. I recently bouth the HLN but am thinking of returning it for the HLP.

TMKILZ,
and when a new model comes up on the horizon will you be on the look out for those too?....
Sounds like you got yourself into a neverending cycle....you gotta make up your mind sometime.
I agree with anonymous...do research, pick one, and commit yourself.
I have a 4663W and love it. I've had a couple months of pleasure while others are waiting for the latest model.
As in the world of computers, there will always be a next-best-thing.

I have the 4663 hooked up to the high-def iO box with component cables, and the high-def image is very good. I use the DVI input for the DVD player. The DVI output of the cable box is more defined than with component cables, but both are very good. Buy with confidence.

I purchased the HLP5685W "Capt. Kirk" and I have to say, it looks very impressive in my living room. The unit had a GREAT pic at BB, which pretty much convinced me to buy it.I'm having the cable company (CableVision) install their HDTV cable box today, can't wait. I've installed my Pioneer dvd player(10 bit unit) using a component cable seup, but the movie didn't look as good as I expected. Is this normal with HDTVs? Samsung will be coming out with a new dvd player (HD941)which will have both DVI & HDMI outputs. Will this unit (HD941) help with dvd movie's picture quality on the HLP5685W?

I just read the long string regarding everyone's frustration and anxiety in what DLP to purchase. It is comforting to know that I am not the only one undecided (and frustrated). I am leaning towards the sammy 85 but quite frankly hate the fact that it has that pedestal. If the 74 was out - that is what I would buy - but I know that aint going to happen. My local home theater store highly recommened the Loewe Articos DLP 55. It is a very high end german manufacturer. Supposedly the picture is great - however it uses the older DLP HD2 chip. Anyone know anything about this TV?

I am looking forward to the 941 as well, but I think it only has dvi and not hdmi. Besides so far I have not found the discrete codes for either dvi or hdmi.

No Way, I was close to buying the Articos 55, it is truely a great TV. The two things that are turning me away from the Articos are; HD2 (not HD2+) chip and the cost of the Articos is about $7,000 vs. $5,000 for the Samsung also if you do not like the grey/silver border on the Articos it will cost you another $500 for black. I am trying to get in touch with Loewe to find out if they have any future plans using HD2+ but have not been sucessful.

Douglas, just go to the following links,
www.amazon.com or

to purchase the Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-up DVD. It's about $23 & gives you step by step instructions on how to adjust/tweak your audio & video settings.

Does anybody have an opinion on Voom vs Direct TV vs high def cable? I just bought a Samsumg HLP4663W and need to decide which format to go with. I am leaning toward Voom at the moment based on their claim that they have more HD channels than their competitors. Any thoughts?
