Thanks Rooster. Saw other listings with similar S/N's and was hoping mine wasn't one that needed to be taken in. Hopefully my local VW dealership will do it at no or minimal cost.
It's what I get for trying to see if I could repair the display. The black plastic cover on the old radio was very brittle. Crumbled in little pieces when I removed it. I'd just use the faceplate off the new radio but unfortunately it's a little different (98 vs 01).
