Hey, i am buyin a car audio system and i was wondering what i should get? My budget is about $1000 to $1500 (i live in australia). I was thinkin of gettin the alpine CDA-9827 head unit, alpine SPS-171A speakers for the front and alpine SPS-690A speakers for the back. Do you think this system would be any good and if not what should i add to this or what other brands and products should i get?

To be honest, you may really like this setup at first, but if you want to get something that'll sound much better, try considering removing the idea of have full range speakers in the back of th car(unless you're going for a reverse sound stage.) The alpine head unit is nice, I've worked with that one a few times, and I'll say that its worth of keeping in there. Those SPS-171a speakers are pretty nice... but there are definitely better ones in a similar price range.

Try a set of Infinity Perfect 6.1's in the front
and don't put any speakers in the back. The idea behind this is that the sound stage will be in the front, and give it more of that "concert effect".

After you pick up a set of these, if you still want speakers in the back, consider a set of Mid Range speakers, and cross them over at around 3000-3500hz. As for an amp for these, you said that your total was around 1000-1500.

You're going to also want an amp for these, something that'll push out around 100 watts @ 4 ohms.

I think this will work nicely for you.

There are also other speakers better than the 6.1's but you can get a set for around 200 bucks USD on ebay. Make sure you have the clearance for them in the front. (depth)

Another inexpensive high end component set are CDT Classics. You could also look at Diamond Audio HEX series, not too terrible in the right spots (but more than the Perfects), or possibly the JL Audio XR series. I'm not saying these are better than the Perfects as it's subjective, they're just options that you can look into, your ears are the final decision maker. Dynaudio and Focal are my two favorites, but it's likely that you won't find them for your budget, at least not cheap enough that you can find a quality amp to push them with. Totally forget rear speakers, they affect the front soundstage and pull the sound rearward if not done correctly. With your budget, the money you would spend on rear speakers would be better spent on an amplifier or component set.

In addition to Jonathan's recs, I'd add that Clif Designs and Elemental Designs are good "small company" alternatives that are friendly on the budget.
