JL Audio Speakers not giving bass

Hi,

I just installed a JL Audio VR690-CXi in my car. These are 6x9 speakers. It is mainly an upgrade from my existing 6x9.

It seems that these speakers are not giving out much bass after installing them. My HU is a Kenwood KDC-MP6533 (50W x4 Mosfet).

Am I missing something in my installation ?
Speaker cables need an upgrade ?
Amplifier needed ?

Thanks

I have 2 sets of JL speakers for my front/rear doors. And, they don't even come close to producing any bass. Sorry, wrong speaker for the job! You'll need a subwoofer or different 6x9's.
My stock 10-year old Toyota speakers had more bass that you could feel when compared to the JL's. The JL's have great midrange and high's.

An amp will make it louder but I doubt that it'll make any more bass.

You should take a look on how they are mounted. Might need to soundproof or seal of the speakers better.

How/where are they mounted?

Be sur that the polarity is right, you can try to switch the 2 wires on both speakers!

Hi Pete,

The speakers are mounted at the rear, directly onto the metal body. I do agree that the speakers produce great mid and high's. The voice clarity was better than my old infinity.

Not sure how to soundproof them. Is it like putting dampeners or sponge in the boot ?

Hi Plymouth,

Ok, i will try change the polarity. But as far as I remembered, the polarity was correct.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Are they mounted on a rear deck using the trunk as the enclosure?
Trunks do not make good enclosures and some speakers don't like that 'free-air' installation. Seal up the trunk if possible.

A $10 speaker baffle would be a good test to see if your speakers like how they're mounted. If sound improves, they don't like the location. Wrong speaker for the job. If sound doesn't change with the baffle, then you either need more power to the speakers, or again have the wrong speaker for the job.

Here's what a speaker baffle looks like.

I don't care for the bass of smaller JL speakers. 6x9's should give you a thump like an 8" sub. But, if they sound worse than 6" walmart speakers, it says much for their lack of quality.

Its like some speaker brands force you to buy a sub and extra amp. Spend more spend more spend more......

Hi Pete,

That's what i had in mind. Just good speakers with a reasonable head unit. Don't want to spend on subs, amps, etc...

How are your JL audio speakers ? Not giving good bass ?

I mounted it on the original factory location at the rear (right behind the rear seats). My car is a sedan, so i think it is better than a hatchback (where the isolation between the boot and cabin isn't so good).

When you say "seal up the trunk"", do you mean by the boot is totally 'sealed' when closed ? Maybe i will need to add a strip of rubber to completely seal it.

I will try searching for some baffle here at the same time.

Hi Plymouth,

I tried changing the polarity and it does not work.

Update.

I tried putting a baffle there. No difference.

But while doing that, notice something. The bass comes out when i set my head unit to power just 1 rear speaker. That means if I just power the rear-left speaker, then the bass comes out. When I power both rear speakers, the bass is gone.

Do I need to upgrade the power cable to my head unit ?
Or does this call for an amp ?

crap... I was hoping to go without an amp.

Just wondering, is my head unit not powerful enough to drive the JL speakers ?
Or are JL speakers hard to drive ?

I wouldn't really say power ratings affect how a speaker will sound...

An efficient speaker that needs less power can sound powerfull than an inefficient speaker that needs more power. (your speaker are well rated)

It happened to me when I replaced my stock 6x9 on a old car, I had lost bass power because those high power speakers need a bigger amplifier to provide their maximum gain!
