Possibly, I've had a few friends that used those converters and eventually ended up getting aftermarket HU's because they kept having a lot of problems with the converters. They all said that once they installed the aftermarket HU's that they noticed a pretty nice increase in output. Does your converter have a built in line driver? If it doesn't then I know that the voltage signal going to your amp is very small like 500mv, for example as compared to most HU's that have outputs around 2-5v. This might not affected your actual spl output but I think it affects the overall sound quality of the system.
