I was wanting a SQL setup but i already know this setup is going to get loud so i'm going to try and make it a great sq setup.. I'm also going to post another thread in the speaker section soon because still deciding which comps to go with.. but anyways so i have been ckecking out these 5 head units.. I'm pretty positive they are all good ones but if i'm mistaken then please help and correct me. And hopefully nobody is too lazt to look at them lol but i'll post links if i have to. you can just go to google shopping and find them all though.
1. Pioneer mvh-p8200
2. Pioneer deh-p800prs
3. Kenwood Excelon kdc-x693
4. Kenwood Excelon kdc-x794
5. Clarion vz309

Hopefully i can get a lot of helpful feedback on any of these! Thanks!

out of all those, the 800PRS is the most advanced.

if you like Pioneer check the dex-p99rs (32 bit DSP), it will outperform the 800prs which is a fantastic HU for sound quality (heard it), only missing built-in USB (need a module for that). Kenwood OK but sound quality may not be on par with those Pioneers.

i have looked into the dex-p99rs many times joe i dream about getting it.. haha but it is extremely expensive i think about $1300.. that's alot of money for a head unit. maybe if i get a $1000 bonus i will get it lol i haven't used a kenwood but glasswolf said the excelons are pretty good.. i will most likely get the pioneer. But still not positive. i'll probably wait until i get all of my other equipment ready, but never know. hopefully the bonus will come before then

okay i have had two different pioneers and they both went out i have a JVC kd-r610 and it only cost me 150 i love it tho. it has a pro equalizer and also changes colors lol. But i jus havent had good luck with the pioneers, some people do its really up to you and what you like and what you think will look good in your car but my JVC made my system sound better than the pioneers

With a limited budget I guess that almost any HU with 24 bit Ti/BB DACs (that you actually heard) will do OK, besides the rest of the system needs to be on par, if you pick the wrong speakers it will be far worse, installation issues can also totally ruin a setup. Maybe you could also take a look at the Alpine CDA-117 (very natural & neutral sound), it can be found for $250.

Austin yea dude i've only owned one head unit i got the cheapest one i could get at the time its a JVC kd-r210 and man it's worked good no problems with it at all! but now i'm getting into car audio more i want great quality items and for the most part you get what you pay for right. don't get me wrong the JVC is great and simple but need something with more tuning options you know. But yea i've looked into all of the alpine units.. I'm going to go to some dealers soon and hopefully check a few out even though it's hard to tell if it's not in the car but i can check out all the features hand on.. thanks guys

ya thats the reason i got this one look up that model i put in previous post. It actually has a pro equalizer that allows you to tune it better than most head units. Its cool if you would want somethin a little more but i jus thot i would suggest that to you because it is such a good deal.

I don't like Kenwood.

The 800PRS is a great head unit. I used one briefly. Best looking unit of the list, too.

How much more complex does anyone think the dex-p99rs is than the deh-p800prs?? its like double the price or triple actually but i don't actual think i'll wait and buy it i was jw.. it would be nice but too much. plus i'm going from the cheapest JVC you can get to the DEH i think i'll be more than satisfied.

It's probably not too much more complex. You're mostly just paying for better build quality and components for a cleaner sound. I watched the video they have on pioneer's website and it was strange to note that of the six or seven people interviewed, only one made a comment on how it sounded. The others focused mostly on the 31 band EQ, and one had a random comment on how it preserved settings even when the battery was disconnected (which makes sense if you don't want to adjust 31 bands of EQ again haha).

There are definitely other SQ head unit options such as:
Denon DCT-Z1,
McIntosh MX5000,
McIntosh MX4000,
Nakamichi CD700ii,
Clarion DRZ-9255,
Grundig SCD-1910,
Eclipse ECD-510
Alpine F1

Though in a similar vain, if you could get the Pioneer DEX-P9/DEQ-P9 combo, that would be my personal fav. Another thing: does the dex-p99rs even do .mp3? I did note it has iPod capabilities, which is a bonus.

Glass, have you played around at all with any of PIoneer's Stage 4 equipment? I'm curious.

the P99RS is what I use now and it's magnitudes beyond the PRS800, but it's designed for running a fully active system. It has a full 4-way crossover, two 31-band 1/3-octave EQs, high end DACs, etc.
It's their flagship model, and it runs about $1000-1200 street price.

I'm guessing you didn't pay that price for it, did you?

I have to say, it looks like an absolutely fantastic head unit. I've been pondering getting one but the price is too high. I used to have the DEX-P1R and wow, it had a great sound (and I have to admit the EQ was superb). Got rid of it though since it was just so dated (especially since at the time .mp3 capability was important to me--then again, the P99RS doesn't have .mp3 playback, does it?). Though the iPod capability is a major plus. Also, the P99RS doesn't have any type of surround sound capability, does it?

What happened to your old head unit? I seem to recall you had a flagship Pioneer or Alpine F#1.

Well that sucks man! but yea the P99RS is too much for me to spend on a head unit.lol i think i'm most likely going to go with then 800rs.. Wait does the 800rs have usb or mp3 aux input capabilities? I have heard good reviews on the eclipse 794 though but damn.. i think pioneer would be my best choice.

I don't really use mp3 as source material much.
yes I had the F#1status combo for a while, then went to the Pioneer P9 combo, then to the P99RS.

no surround on the P99RS. It's a CD player, not DVD.

Yea i've seen those videos. But i use my ipod all the time.. i have so much music on 3 ipods.lol but lately i've been starting to make a lot of cd's because the quality is much better and i can tell the difference between the two very easily. But it's a lot easier for me to just scroll through 5,000 songs in just a few minutes.

How do they all compare to each other? I'm really curious as those are probably my top picks for next head unit.
