i recently purchased a pair of infinity 652.9. the amp is a tma 320 4, its turned up to a little over half and then i turn my volume to about 70% with no distortion, i start to smell burning, is this fine for new speakers, should i wait a couple hrs before i crank em, or did i do something wrong here. The crossover is set to 125 hz from my deck which is a clarion dxz785usb 6 volt pre out deck.
Sounds like you're sending too much voltage to the speakers and you're burning up the speaker. How much rms can the speakers hold, what ohm load are they and how much does the amp put out at that given ohm load? You'll need to set the gain correctly to be sure you're not over powering them.
speakers 75 rms the amp gives 80 rms at 2 ohms(they are two ohm speakers). but it says it gives 80 rms at 14.5 volts... so you think i should just turn the gain down a little, it doesnt matter if they are new? cause i used to get a burning smell with my other speakers, and just over time, they would no longer smell, the coils dont seem charred or darkened in any way.
You can set the gain same as you would with a sub amp. You'll need a digital multi-meter. For 75 rms at 2 ohm, you'd need 12.24 volts per channel. That is of course with everything on the deck set at Zero and at 75% volume, played a constant 50 Hz sine wave. If you havn't already, set the subs in your car the same. Should be even then, all way around. From there you could adjust the gain down if your sub(s) or in car speakers are too loud and uneven.
With 6 volt pre-outs, the gain may not need to be very high. You may be sending more voltage to the speakers than theyre able to handle and not even know it. Doing this could cause the burning.
