I am trying to choose between JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, or Polk Audio in terms of 6.5" door and rear speakers and tweeters. Which brand is best? Just overall, which brand is known for being really good??
You cannot judge a set of speakers based on a brand. You can judge a set of speakers based on a set of speakers. Brand A vs. Brand B is a crappy comparison. Speaker A vs. Speaker B is a lot more informed. There is no credibility to the brand method whatsoever, sorry. The OP didn't even specify which speakers he's looking at from each brand......so OP what specific speakers are you looking at?
For Boston Acoustics I was thinking of getting the SL60 component speaker system, for JL Audio I was looking into the XR 650CSi component speaker system, and for Polk the MM6501 component speaker system. All of these seem to have similar specifications but I don't know much about speakers, so I would like which one would be best. Also, I was interested in some Alpine Type R speakers, but let me know what you guys think, I need some help.
"Sony anyone? They're always garbage, no matter what model you pick."
Agreed...that was a bit general on my part lol. (However Sony actually does have one..just one lol...decent high end component set sold only in Japan).
Anyways, okay so we know what you're considering now.....what type of sound are you after...have you heard any of these sets first hand at a local shop?
The only two sets from the four I mentioned that I have heard are the Alpine Type R's and the JL Audio ones. I have two friends that have the sets and I think they sound great. What I am looking for is low and good, non cracking bass, with great clear mids and clean highs, yet without being too high to pierce your ears.
As for the bostons and polk i have never heard them before but I have had personal experience with a few sets of the jl xr series for clear mids and highs i would say the xr would be a great speaker. if crossed over properly i suppose you could make them thump without crackling for sure but i think you will be loosing were they will shine the most. you will hear a good mid bass out of them for sure and they will have a great range also.
another thing i would recommend for these speakers is definitely an amplifier.
thanks for the advice with the jl speakers. does anyone else have any ideas about the other three sets of speakers? having more to chose from would be great. thanks.
I bought a set of SL60's absolutely amazing, there isnt a clearer top end and mid (makes me smile everytime i turn it up on a high kbps track, and thats what you want in audio gear, its not there to be the main attraction but to add to the moment with quality, you paid money for it to do that), they're running off a jl 80w rms each cannel 2 ch amp, and pioneer HU, Audioquest RCA and speaker cable (Home Theatre Quality Brand), ive also got a set of polk audio home speakers at home and are really good also, from what I'VE heard in jb hi-fi JL are ok, but thats only in a shop situation, may be different in your car.
Once you have bought make sure your happy, ive been in shops and they tuned it on the spot as i was listening, he added so much treble it then sounded terrible to me (oh and 'sound quality' isnt a universal constant, its a personal thing, so its all personal preference), i dont understand how having HEAPS of clear treble makes the speakers good, its the whole bandwidth that the speaker is designed to reproduce, listen for the whole spectrum (need of better word) when listening to what you want to buy .
Also if your looking at speakers, look at that brands TOP model, this is their 'show pony', if its wining awards than they have quality technology in these models, Remeber one thing and this the technology, now this technology wont cut off as you go down in models, its just the quailty of materials that will change and how its made but the technology will be relativly the same, this applies to ALL electronics and technology. so if one bands 'show pony' is winning awards have a good look at their stuff and see what you think, when i bought my SL's the Z series (bostons top of the range) had just taken out the top title, and with my bostons i can easily see how.
whatever you choose make sure it gets tuned to what you like not what it sounds like in a store, music is personal and so is how you listen to it, if you have any other questions ask me
everytime you ask which speaker the best and everyone who answers jL is an money spending...
JL is expensive, I agree. It's also very good.
But statements such as "JL is overpriced!" urk me because you can easily find used JL equipment for excellent prices. Would I ever pay retail for JL equipment? No. Just because people buy JL doesn't mean they pay full price.
Another thing to consider with JL subwoofers in particular is that more people know what it is and hence it doesn't lose its resale value as fast as other comparable subwoofer brands such as (and not trying to step on any toes here) TC Sounds, Fi etc.
which speaker set is best will depend on: -your ears (it's very subjective as to the timbre of a speaker set and what you find appealing) -your environment (the car) -those flappy things on the side of your head -the rest of the system and poer applied to those speakers (head unit? amplifier?) -your ears -mounting position and aiming -your own ears -your budget -them ears -which exact speaker model you are considering. JL, Rainbow, DLS, MB Quart, Polk, Focal, everybody makes multiple lines of speakers, and trying to even compare Rainbow Profi to Rainbow Utopia line speakers is night and day, let alone say, Rainbow Utopias to DLS Ultimate series components, neither of which 99% of us could even afford. Both outstanding speaker sets, but both very different in timbre.
Of course other woofers can "blow" JL out, or however you put it. JL is sound quality oriented. Anyone who knows car audio knows that SQ is going to run you more than SPL (in most cases). JL costs more thusly and is not going to pound and get as long as other "cheaper" brands because they're geared for SQ not SPL. Everyone has their own preference in brands and is welcomed to it. Also with JL you're also getting quality. JL will last and hold up and is worth the investment. They're also well known so you are paying for the name. You're paying for other people knowing what you're talking about and the quality associated with it. It's just like buying a car or a tv. You can buy many different 1080P tvs but we're all going to like one better than another. They all do the same thing but to one, the picture is going to look better on one brand than another. So don't hate on a given brand. It's all about preference and choice.
To reinforce it even more, for years I worked in the tire business and car audio is a lot like tires. People would walk in the door with their nice new car and want a nice ride, yet buy the cheapest tires possible. They would come back the next day, demand a refund and want to upgrade to a set of Michelins. Even though we told them the day before and tried to get them to listen, they chose not to. Just like with high priced car audio, people want the most for their money but going cheap isn't always a good idea. You should shoot for what you're looking for and if it's important enough to you, then its worth the price.
JL that is. It was late when I wrote that. Anyway, For a long time, JL only catered to brick and mortar storefronts, disallowing any internet sales of their products through retail channels. It was only within the past few years that they changed that policy. If you can't afford JL, then buy something else, but they are very well made and well designed products, and until you can demonstrate some inkling of knowledge to back up your ranting, picklemeat, just let it go.
Your trolling was already reported to the site administration for review, anyway.
