i just purchased some boss bullet tweeters like 200w or more, and i was reading some threads about tweeters and they were saying that they should come with crossovers, my ? is what if they dont. And do they need to be powered by an amp. My jenson uv7i HU says it puts out 160 or 180 watts is that good enough, keep in mind im not looking for a pro system by i would like them to be worth what i payed for them. And by the way you all have helped out a bunch, thanks

those tweeters cant handle 200 watts... and your jensen doesnt put out 180 watts its like 13x4 so it will really put out about 13 watts to each speaker. and tweeters are meant to only play high frequencies so dont worry about a cross over. the reason you would have a cross over is if you bought component speakers that would also come with a woofer.
and no your not looking for a pro system, because yours is no where near that level.
and no they dont need to be powered by an amp.

I'm a little new to car audio, but don't speakers need an amp?

And wouldn't it be nice to be able to separate the lows from the hi freqs?

Should cwruck run some kind of LF driver, crossover and the tweeter, on each side....like left/right?

A crossover to the tweeter can be as simple as a capacitor in series with the 'hot' lead. Value determines the frequency.

i would of installed another amp if i needed. but i guess the tweeters i got were junk and wouldnt handle the power. they seemed like they were ok to me but you know. i only payed 20.00 for them on e-bay. Ive never had a system before so im just experimenting with different things. but i will take the addvice.

the tweeters should only be able to play frequecies from like 2000 hz on up.. or around that number. So there would be no need to have a crossover on them. You dont need an amp, your car stereo has a built in amp. thats why when you look at the specs of a deck it will say like a mosfet amp or whatever, and give you the power ratings. i was saying your deck would push out about 13 watts rms.
and what leo is talking about is components i believe.. a component speaker will consist of a woofer and tweeter which is a 2 way. and it will have its own cross over that you connect the speakers too.

you dont need to worry about the tweeters saying they are 200 watts and think that since you dont have 200 watts to power them it wont work..
they really cant handle that power and will sound fine on anywhere from about 10-50 watts
a car stereo is just like any other thing you buy, the more money you spend the better product your going to get. if you just want to have some sound in your car theres nothing wrong with what your doing.

the reason for the tweeters in the first place was after i installed the amp it was just bass, fun for a min then i wanted to hear the words. but then i move the low frequency switch which was better but didnt seem to hit as hard but i could hear the door speakers again

i was thinking of getting another amp and powering the other speaker with it to see what that does. Put them both on the low frequency setting. ill figure it out sooner or later. I still have faith in the cheap stuff. i think it more that i dont know what the f im doing }
