Speaker question

When selecting an amp for speakers, is it better to get an amp that puts out power closer to the max power of your speakers, the RMS power of your speakers, or somewhere in the middle?

Match the RMS of the amp closely to the RMS rating of the speakers. Never go by peak ratings.

At or slightly above the RMS will maximize the match without ever exceeding any tolerances.

Cheat sheet for 4 ohms: Peak is the full throw of power, from negative to positive. RMS is usually 1/4 of this rating, because it is the mean (near-average) power in a single throw direction (positive only). You will usually have a clean signal up to 1/3 of the Peak rating. Divide the last value by the number of channels.

For example:
400W max = 100W RMS = 133W clean music power
which is 66Wx2 or 33Wx4 clean.

A good amp should have < 0.1% THD at its RMS rating.

OK so then can someone recomend an amp to me to power 1 pair of MB Quarts RCE268 speakers? The power range is 60-130 watts, 4ohms impedance.

HiFonics XI Samson
75Wx2, beautiful response and THD. $190

Phoenix Gold Octane R-4.0:2
75Wx2, great response, decent THD. $120 on eBay

Kenwood KAC-6201
60Wx2, good specs, appropriate, cheap. $80 on eBay

the Phoenix Gold Octane R-4.0:2 is 125x2, I think you mean the Phoenix Gold Octane-R R2.5:2 2, which is 80x2, is that right, would that amp still be good?

Ah, but there's the trick... did you see the "RMS" label anywhere around the 125W?

No, because 125 watts is peak for the R4... RMS is actually 75.

The Octane-R 2.5 is 50Wx2 (RMS) and would be underpowered.

Enjoy,

Yeah I was looking at it on ebay, i guess they didn't have the rms power up there. Does it mean anything that it is 75x2 at "14.4v"? because I've never seen is say that before

99% of the time, they are giving the max 14.4v. Occassionally you will see the 12v rating.

I wouldn't use the R2.5 with those speakers -- but that's me. I tend to err on the side of caution (proven moreso than most folks around here). I would get at least 60W RMS to be absolutely certain I'd never clip them.

Would the Phoenix Gold Octane R-4.0:2 amp still work?

This was recently explained in another thread:

hey matt would you recommend getting the 6.5" template to put in my car and getting a pair of 6.5" instead of the 6x8's? If so can you recommend a good pair of 6.5" speakers that would be better than the MB Quarts RCE 268 speakers for around $150?

That's a tough call. Some car manufacturers' 6x8 opening also has compatible mounts for 6.5" and 5x7s.

That being said, you will most likely need a 5.25" adapter. In that, I'd mount the Infinity Kappa 50.5cs ($120), which has a bigger-than-usual magnet for a decent throw. Mount those tweeters high -- dash, pillar, or door -- and you'll be set.

Don't forget, you'll need 85W RMS to drive 'em. There's a Hifonics NX400 on eBay for $100.

so the Infinity Kappa 50.5c's would be a lot better than the MB Quarts RCE 268 ?

Hmm... Now that's subjective. That's what I would do; the 50.5cs are much better speakers overall. BUT, you may prefer the Qs of the 6x8s over the quality of the 5.25"s. Realize that, retail, the 50.5cs are almost $100 more than the 268s.

If at all possible, go listen to the difference somewhere (like Tweeter) to make up your mind.

Ok one other thing. I've got subs. Would you recomennd a bass blocker for my speakers to let my subs just handle the bass load?

You should have the crossover set between 80- and 120-Hz, depending on preference.

What are you talking about? What crossover? Should I get a bass blocker?

Both speaker sets in question have crossovers.

oh those. I take it those would do the same as a bass blocker.
