Ok, so, i'm moving into a new house, and need to buy a hifi system. I've done a lot of research, and these pesky audiophiles keep confusing me with their contradictory advice!

I have a large room - 26'x16'x10', and one wall is completely open to the outside, so i'm figuring this will suck my bass away. it's also tiled, but we have plenty of couches and a rug to absorb reflections.

No matter how many articles i read, i can't figure out whether i would be better off going with a pair of floorstanders, or some bookshelves and a sub. Or maybe floorstanders and a sub??

My budget's modest - USD700, so there are constraints there too. just to throw a confounding spanner in the works, i've heard that you can get powered floorstanders with hefty bass, but haven't come across anything within my budget that would work here.

ok guys, there's the quandry, do your worst!

Thanks,

G

Sorry im no home audio expert.. im trying to build my own home system at the moment but from what i do know since you have a large room is that floorstanding probably wont cover that whole room with bass.. and there really are no floorstanders at that price that can really sound good under 40 hz. i would say get some bookshelves with a sub and just set your cross over at 80 hz. but thats just my opinion. what speakers and sub were you thinking about getting?

I would start with the home audio section.
