it gives the following minimum and maximum box sizes for a sealed setup:
0.85 cubic feet to 1.75 cubic feet. They recommend a sealed box size of 1.25 cubic feet. This is right about in the middle of the minimum and maximum range.
So I went and downloaded the WinISD program and put in all the Thiele numbers and it spat out the following optimal sealed box size for me:
1.091 cubic feet Optimal box shape for a cube shaped box: 13.94" wide 21.45" high 8.93" deep
I'm using 1.8 cm (.709")thick MDF board to build the box.
So my question is... which recommendation is better... the recommended size from Pioneer or the recommended size from the WinISD program?
From you all here that have built hundreds of boxes before ... who should I listen to... or do you all have other recommendations taking into account all those Thiele numbers shown above?
I think I basically want 50/50 SQ/SPL sound. It should sound good and it should sound loud ...if possible.
By the way here's the ported recommendations from Pioneer for this sub as well:
Ported Maximum box size is 2.05 cubic feet with a maximum port hole opening of 3" diameter x3" (odd that the "maximum" port size is smaller than the minimum port size... is this normal or is this a typo?) Ported Minimum box size is 1.25 cubic feet with a maximum port hole opening of 3" diameter x8"
The Pioneer optimal recommendation for a ported box is: 1.65 cubic feet and a port hole opening of 3" diameter x6"
The WinISD program spits out these optimal numbers for a ported box:
2.266 cubic feet with a tuning frequency of 28.21 Hz
Opimal ported box shape: 17.39" wide 26.98" high 11.00" deep The port hole size is 4.02" diameter with a length of 15.65" and the ported box has a vent mach of 0.10
There's a chance I inputted the stats into WinISD incorrectly for the sub as I'm not that familiar with the program and some stats I wasn't exactly sure of.... example Re in ohms, I used 1.5 but was I supposed to use 3.0 as this is a dual voice coil sub so should I double that figure?
These are the inputs I used to enter into the WinISD program. Did I convert them correctly from the Thiele stats provided by Pioneer?
Qts 0.48 Vas 36.2 Litres Fs 33.70 Hz Re 1.50 ohm Le 2.18 Xmax 0.009 metres Z 99.13 ohm Qms 14.11 Qes 0.50 SPL 91.00 dB Pe 400.0 Watts BL 16.07 dia 0.055 metres Sd 0.046 metres^cubed
So which out of all these recommendations has the best potential SQ/SPL setup? There seems to be quite a variation especially in the ported box figures between the Pioneer recommendations and the WinISD calculations.
To answer your first question whether or not you should go by winISD or what pioneer recommends, it appears that pioneer recommends 1.25 and winISD recs ~ 1.10 cubes. That's .1 of a difference and it doesn't really matter. 1.25 should be fine if you were to go sealed.
and do they not have your pioneer on file on winISD? if not i cannot remember which values your suppossed to enter off the top of my head, i dont use winISD (Unibox FTW) i believe the values your supossed to enter is Qms, Qes, fs, mms, re, pe, xmax and Le. Not 100% positive though, Unibox is more user friendly.
If you are interested in a box design and a cutlist you can always send me an email.
WinISD doesn't have my subs stats in it (neither does the Unbibox database as far as I can tell). I think it's a reasonably new sub so that may explain why the stats aren't in there yet.
