i currently have all 4 2 way speakers running straight off the head unit which puts out 52Watts to each. When i turn the volume up high the sound somtimes becomes distorted, would an amp fix this as it would deliver more power to the speakers???

That 52 watts is probably peak rating which you will rarely actually see. An external amp will cut down on distortion, but I would recommend speakers to match as well...

It depends on what you mean by distortion. If the bass is too high and the speakers bottom out that will lead to "distortion". Are they factory speakers? I doubt youre overpowering them but that could be one factor if they are stock. A 4 channel amp will let you control how much power is going to the speakers and most importantly will give you a high pass filter. This will let the speakers get plenty loud without bottoming out, given the gain is set correctly and filter is set correctly. Try to run each speaker at a 4 ohm load as well on the amp, that will give you the most clarity for your highs.

Yeah, I was only stating as a general rule that external amps have less distortion. External amps are much larger and do the job more efficiently with less distortion in most cases.
