If I have a 1080 monitor, what do I need from my PC to watch HD?

I am looking to buy a full HD (1080) monitor. Do I need anything special on my PC to watch HD (720) home movies in HD? I do not have a bluray disk drive or anything special on my PC.

Would I connect to the HD monitor via the VGA or DVI connection? If yes, would I see the videos in HD?
