Bought a truck, had 2 12 kicker comps Ina custom box made for "some jl subs bro" and a garbage amp..600 watts.
Now I put in two alpine type rs (12) in a porter pre fab box & pdx1000 and the kicker comps sounded way fckn better... WHY?!

x2 on the prefab failure.

Not being an azz, but when you mean "sound better" do you mean louder, or actually sound better. I ask because I know people who say subs sound bad if they aren't loud, needless to say they are retards.

Can you give us an example on how the kickers sounded better?

The alpines just didn't bang hard, it seemed like they weren't having stiff bass. If you know what I'm saying??

The kickers would fckn shake everything in my truck and shake my eyeballs and have that weird feeling in yr throat, the alpines did not..

&&& what do you mean it's beacuse I used better equip?..

the kickers sounded better the the type r's

&+ I know prefab is weak sh!t but it's just a temp box, obvs lol

Well using prefab box is part of your answer as to why.

If you think the Kickers sounded better than the type R's than you need to get those R's out of that prefab sh!t and listen again. Granted that just might be your kinda style I don't know but I've heard both and kicker is loud yes but sounds no where near as clean as type r's which can still get really loud. Like jack just said its all in the install

nay... the dynamat is not going to fix ur current problem at all.. spend like 25 dollars on a sheet of mdf and build you a box.. if you know how to do some simple math, know how to use a power drill, and a saw you can make a box..

Why would you waste your money on dynamat if your box is the problem?
Building a new box would be ~40 bucks
Build it right and it will sound good.

go to http://reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html
and design your box

disregard my post up there since i misread what u said - my bad

most likely what happened is that the Rs does not like that prefab box & is not performing good in it , if u get a proper ported box im sure just 1 of those types R will r@pe both comps

also check ur deck & amp filters ...tuning makes a world of difference ...

I wasn't implying that dynamat would be my solution.
Jus an off topic question.

About building a box myself, I'm positive I can build it, I just don't know how to tune a box & sh!t

About making sure my amp is filters are straight & sh!t what should I set all my sh!t too on it? like the gains & sh!t. (pdx 1000)

I have Kineitk power cell cap b.s. should I both hooking it up?

Go to the website given a couple of posts up and it tells you the tuned freq to the specs you put in.

4-4.5 cuft @ somewhere around 32-38hz depending on your car and what you prefer. You said you have a truck so I would tune around 32 - 35 hz.

Use the RE enclosure calculator... That is the easiest.

It has to be your install, because I have r's in a trunk car and I destroy 15" comps in an suv in every aspect.

It may have something to do with how your subs are positioned. They may not be loading very well.

Pics of your current install.

Ducka; thanks for the info & I had the subs blowin to the back of the seat and I didn't like it so I turned em so they'd blow upward and it sounded better and then I turned em so they'd blow toward the back a good 4-7 inches and it sounded the best.

& really? All the way to the right?

Now what determans what hz you should pick for your box?

Like if I had two 12s and played em what would be pointed out to be that'll make me be like oh sh!t this needs to be blah blah blah lol

Yeah i was kidding. bass boost all the way down, gain set by either ear or dmm (i dont feel like going into detail about that right now). those are the two most important knobs the others can generally be adjusted to your preference and how the system is set up.

What do you prefer SPL(loudest, less musical)
SQL (middle ground)
SQ (most musical)

Tuning depends on if you like spl, sql, or sq. Personal preference and the type of sub you are using determines a range of tuning that would be acceptable.

try standing the box on its side and having it against one of the sides of the truck facing in. My friend did this in a extended cab s10 and was noticeably louder. Not guaranteeing results, but it is another option to try.

Ego seeps out from under many of these posts. Take it easy, guys.

Setting the gain by ear is not too difficult. Find a song with clear, heavy bass and turn off your mid-range and high frequency speakers. Set the headunit EQ to flat, turn off any other processing, and set the volume to 3/4. Play the song and slowly increase the gain until you hear distortion. Back off on it a little bit and then listen for a while, put your ear to the sub and listen for signs of stress. Basic rule of thumb: if it sounds bad, turn it down. You could also let them oscillate a while then turn it off and feel the dustcap. If it's super hot, you may want to turn it down and listen again.

With a little practice, clipping becomes painfully obvious.

If you've got any musician friends, they could probably help you set the gain and get a feel for clipping.

Just gonna be getting back on the road so I resurrected my battery from 1/4 Volt. It's holding 13.5 now. Glad I get to keep that $100 I was sure I'd have to spend! Guess I didn't disconnect after that one time I started it up to maintain the battery. Wait... Wow. I just realized I never disconnected the aft battery...

How have you guys been?

Cam; thanks for the help

I went to home depot and talked to them about getting some wood and tools and told em I was going to build a box and the dude told me that Rey would cut me the pieces I needed so all I would have to do is glue and nail the the box together.
