the bigger the box, the lower they will hit. to a point. when you get to big it will all just sound like sh.it. if you want really deep bass look at the specs for the box that they tell you and just go slightly bigger if you want.
If you install any sub in an enclosure larger than what the manufacturer suggests you risk damaging it due to over excursion in a "free air" type state. Most subs need the proper amount of back pressure to operate efficiently. Too large a box allows the driver to exceed its' mechanical limitations. Regardless if you believe it sounds "louder" or "better" it's just not wise to do so.
a bigger box makes it louder at a note just above the tunning hz. but the other notes it will not be as loud. it makes the box peak more and be loud in a smaller area other than many notes. for spl it can be good, but after it gets so big the subs start to free air, unless ur doing spl i wouldn't make it bigger. iv tried a lot with my subs and not damaged mine. but playing daily in a box to big could not be good,
y do'nt u jsut get 15s? then it would be louder, lower and sound all around better in a box that size
I read it last night after work and wanted to question about 75% of it but I was too tired. I don't know much about SPL at all but I know a good amount of that post is wrong.
its not false in the car iv messed with. i can't say it works that way with every sub. a freind of mine it didn't work out to good in spl with a bigger box. and the subs was far from free airing
Wayne it depends on how big is "bigger." In most cases a bigger ported box will get louder, but will roll off quicker... basically it will have a narrower frequency range than say a smaller box. Depends on the applications though as well.
What specs are you thinking of for a box? like box volume, tuning frequency and port area.
Larger enclosures take less power to get the subwoofers mechanical limits.
If you run any sub at its rated rms in a grossly oversized box it will cause problems.
But thats up to the manufactures discretion whats too big.
To be honest my subs are rated 5 each im giving them 6 ea. It gets low and I like it.

BTW I ran my TREO TSX 15 in a 5 cube box for about 7 months. Welllllll........ ripped the tinsel leads clean out the sub.
So based on the terms youve used in your first post. Run exactly what the Manf. suggested
