Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 08:22 GMT I was wondering what would be better?? 2 18" RE Audio XXX subwoofers or 3 13" JL Audio W7 subwoofers? I'm thinking about installing them into a 1973 blazer and wasnt too sure which way to go if i wanted hard pounding clean bass that will grab everyone's attention!! Thank you

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 09:17 GMT The 2 18" will be way deeper and louder. On the other hand the 3 JL's will probly sound a lot cleaner and more accurate. Depends wat your tastes are for bass, deep or accurate.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 10:47 GMT 2 18s would be the way I would go, but that box will be huge in that blazer. 3 12s will need a lot less space.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 14:34 GMT I still don't think the JLs can outdo the XXX on the SQ side.. the BL curve on the XXX makes it very flat/smooth .. it has a great reproduction of natural sound thats why i loved mine

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 16:17 GMT even if both subs were from the same company the cone area of 2 18s is way more than 3 13s so i think u know the answer now ....

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 17:59 GMT Ive had both. With the same speakers you are posting about. There is no comparison IMO. Both will get you attention but 2 18's, ported, tuned low, with decent amount of power....may get you more attention than you want!!

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 18:07 GMT well the cone area of 3 13's is greater than 2 18's. 18 + 18 is 36 and 13 times 3 is 39... if you're talking about the new XXX then i would go with the JL's because of price (never thought i'd say that) and because of box size...

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 18:19 GMT ummm thats not how cone area works now this isnt the EXACT way to find it but it gives you a good idea quote: How to calculate cone area Cone area = pi x (r x r) pi = 3.14 r = radius of sub One 8" = 50.27 One 10" = 78.54 One 12" = 113.1 One 15" = 176.71 One 18" = 254.47 Two 8" = 100.53 Two 10" = 157.08 Two 12" = 226.19 Two 15" = 353.43 Two 18" = 508.94 Three 8" = 150.8 Three 10" = 235.62 Three 12" = 339.29 Three 15" = 530.14 Three 18" = 763.41 Four 8" = 201.06 Four 10" = 314.16 Four 12" = 452.39 Four 15" = 706.86 Four 18" = 1017.87
there is no 13"s on that list but im guessing since three 15"s only have slightly more then two 18"s that the 18"s still have more cone area then the dub7's

Ummm...NO. the 13w7 has an effective surface area of about 132in^2. So thats about 396in^2 for all three. Taking from the chart above the 18s are 509in^2. 509>396

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 07:50 GMT Personally, i would power them with an amp. Final ohm load of sub/subs chosen would start the "what amp" answering process IMO, as not all amps will do all potential loads. A LARGE amp, or likely 2 will suffice. The new 4KW has proven to be dam near bulletproof (protects, instead of breaking...novel idea!!) 3-4k is a great start.

I have not measured exactly out the space i have available for the box and i may end up with 2 15"s but as for right now i'll stick with the 18"s and fall back on the 15"s if needed =] thank you for your thoughts!! i liked them a lot!!!

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 16:27 GMT it's probably gonna be hard to find a pair of 04/05 XXX 18's. You probably have a better chance searching around for the 15's.

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 16:55 GMT caraudio and diymobile forums.. new ones don't sound nearly as good and are geared more towards spl.. re new line of the mx was suppose to replace the older xxx so if you have to buy new i'd say for sql.. go with the mx but DON'T invert the sub

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 21:10 GMT Ok so if you were to put a pair of 04/05 18" XXX next to a new pair of 18" XXX what would the difference be? is there enough difference to try and hunt down a good pair of 04/05 XXX?? Thank you for the advice on inverting the subs ¤Jack_k飣iñgoñ¤

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 21:19 GMT you can invert subs.. just not the MX.. horrible motor noise and yes it would be well worth the search.. side by side.. the new XXX will be louder.. but it also handles 1000rms more the 04/05 model is more efficient.. sounds better .. and side by side on the same power im sure they would be close to the same dB level.. also the price for the new XXXs are insane.. lol

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 21:25 GMT ohhh i see ok ok that makes sense!! yeah we'd have to be comparing apples to apples haha I agree it would be way more because in order to power the pair that amp would cost a pretty penny too thank you ¤Jack_k飣iñgoñ¤

Thursday, February 05, 2009 - 04:18 GMT i wouldn't do the re audio xxx!!! I've gone through two 12 already and I didn't like the overall sound of it. The lows are crazy, but other than that, won't do re again. My two 10w7 have lasted since 2002 and the sq is great. it didn't hit the lows like the 12, but if I build my box a lil bigger, then i might be happy with the lows. I would suggest the jl 13.5, rd audio alphas or heavyweight sql 18's, or audioque 18's for more of the spl side. just my .02

Thursday, February 05, 2009 - 15:46 GMT i have loved EVERY XXX I have ever heard. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I would never dish out the cash for the JL's unless it was a very very good deal. There are better subs for less(in respect to the preformance I desire in a sub).
