I have been given two bids on a sound system for home (new construction) and I'm trying to figure out if the B&W mid level speakers are as good as the SpeakerCraft mid level brand. If you have any general comments on comparing these two brands it would be much appreciated. I do not have specific part or model number...just looking for an overall review. The B&W seem to be a better deal but I want to make sure that they are as good of a brand. |

B&Ws are notoriously difficult to drive, meaning you would require good clean amplification in order to get what you pay for. Matched together with the right amplifier, and these speakers can beautifully articulate the message that it is being fed. Matched with anything else, and it will sound flat like Saskatchewan, dry like desert sand and uninspiring like reading company year end reports. As for your music tastes, that matters as well. Each speaker has a different taste. One speaker set may play Jazz or Classical as good as it gets, but fail miserably at the good ol' Rock n' Roll. |

New member Username: TiasmithPost Number: 3 Registered: Jan-08 | Well, the deal is that this my boss asked me to find out what I could on the two brands...he did not give me a specific speaker nor do I know anything about the amplifier that he will be using or his music taste. So let's just say that he has a great amplifier and he is a top 40 kind of guy...would the mid price ranged speakers from B&W sound just as good as the SpeakerCraft? He wants to go with the B&W because the price he has been quoted is better. |

They also have a lot of very happy customers. Naturally, there are many who don't get on with B&W speakers, so for them B&W is the wrong choice and this is why the others here say that the boss has to hear the difference for himself. Be that as it may, if the boss doesn't have the time or doesn't have the opportunity to hear anything it's difficult to know what to say. B&W are renowned for their R&D and attention to detail. They cover all aspects of loudspeaker production making everything from cabinets throgh to drive units. they are not exactly renowned for making in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, but they do offer many seemingly good options in that field. B&W are a relatively safe bet. That said Speakerkraft is an in-wall/in-ceiling specialist of some repute. All they do is this type of speaker and they have done so for some time. Speakerkraft's options offer specialised crossovers that allow you to tailor the speaker's presentation to a degree, which should mean you should be able to find the presentation you like in your installation. Of course, there's an element of knowing what you're doing and it strikes me that your boss isn't the sort to want to mess about to get things right. the installer will iobviously set things up to his taste, but it does mean that the Speakerkrafts have a flexibility not found in most speakers of this type. Personally, I tend to recommend Speakerkraft specifically for this reason. Therefore, I would go with the Speakerkraft option if possible. Regards, Frank. |
