Wiring Amp

I recently got a new amp that I'm going to use to power my subs. It is capable of running at 4.2,1 ohm (like most are). My subs are 2 ohm models. I was just wondering if it is possible to connect both of my 2 ohm subs to my amp in a way that make it put out a 2 ohm signal.

Thanks.

The signal isn't 2 ohms.
Two 2 ohm loads wired in parallel will yield a 1 ohm load.

Maybe I'm not explaining it right.

The amp puts out 550 watts at 4 ohms

1100 watts at 2 ohms

and 1600 watts at 1 ohm.

The subs need 500 watts each.

I just want to know if it is possible to wire the subs so that they recieve 500 watts.

Nope. Run it at 1 ohm with the gains down.

what amp is it?

It's the Hifonics Brutus 1606D.

So there is no way to wire the subs so that they take advantage of the 2 ohm capabliity of the amp?

no, unless they are dual 2ohm vc subs instead of svc like you typed. but it's a hifonics, so you wont be seeing 1600w anyways, more like 1400w. set the gain correct then back off it some. but what subs are they?

They are Alpine Type R 2 Ohm(Dual Voice Coil)

Did I type single any where?

It's good down to one ohm. You're not going to get exactly 2 ohms, anyway. Speakers are reactive loads, so the impedance (I believe the term resistance is used when it's a resistive load) will change with frequency. Then there's box rise, resistance of your conductors, resistance of terminals, etc. Amps will run cooler at higher impedances.

Ohhhh. Then you wire coils in series and subs in parallel. That will give you 2 ohms nom.

I figured I wouldn't get an exact 2 ohm load from the amp, but I didn't see why I should put it down to 1 ohm if 2 ohm would be fine.

Sorry about my above post.

So you are now saying that it is possible?

Yes it's possible just do what he said, coils in series on each sub, then both subs in parallel.

Also:

Those hifonics amps are overrated, keep that in mind when setting the gain. That amp at 2 ohm will do ~900 watts at the MOST. Probably closer to 800.

Are you serious?

I thought Hifonics was a pretty good brand amp.

If this is true. Would it be better to wire them down to 1 ohm? Would I lose sq or spl? Would the amp get too hot?

You can't wire them to 1 ohm if they are dual 2 ohm. You would have to run at 2 ohm and just not be powering the fully, that or get a different amp.

Hifonics are budget quality, and they do about 80% of what the claim for power

I knew that Hifonics wasn't top of the line, but I thought they were ok.

I figured $199 for a 1100 watt amp at 2 ohm was pretty good.

I suppose you really do get what you pay for.

They are ok....... they just lie about their power ratings

Do they put out on the high side of 80% power or on the low side.

Am I going to be getting around 880 watts or less?

Should be about 800-900

Ok. I think I can live with that wattage right now. I'm not looking to compete or anything close to that.

The subs are rated for 500 rms. Am I'm going to notice a big reduction in quality since they are not receiving their full potential?

No. 800-900w compared to 1000w should be barely noticable.
