Stupid newbie question

I've had enough of my cable company and am ready to tell them to cram it with their price hikes. So I've been look at satellite and wondering about ways to keep the costs down. I see lots of P4 cards on eBay that get the "preview channels." WTF does this mean and what can I *really* expect to get with one of these? I've tried reading through stuff here and I'm totally confused.

If you don't have anything invested in one particular satllite company then I would go with Dishnet or Bell Expressview. In Canada you can purchase or "hack" Bell. Dishnet can only be purchased in the US not in Canada but it can be hacked here. The new cardless Blackbird from Dishnet is awesome. You type in a code to access channels. Dishnet and Direct TV are pretty similar offering better programming than our sucky Canadian Bell but Direct TV is temporarily down to hackers so I'd go Dishnet. Sorry about the rambling. I am not a sat expert by anymeans just a user and observer of this forum. I'm sure you'll get better advice after mine.

One more thing, if you are in Canada and you hack Bell or Starchoice(which sucks) you leave yourself open to criminal charges whereas Direct TV(DTV) and Dishnetwork(Dish) is a grey area in Canada which is frowned upon but there is no legal recourse for the American companies to get us and our government doesn't care...they are probably busy at Tim Hortons trying the new Maple Walnut Dip ;)

P.P.S. "preview channels are worthless channels. No p*rn or PPV(pay per view) so they are worthless. I would hold off on DTV until a hack is found or go Dish...just as good except you need 2 dishes to access 2 different satellites(one regular channels and 1 for PPV) my cousin has a sweet setup with his Blackbird that gets over 1200 channels and his dish is remote acting like the old large ones that turn to get the signal so he only needs one dish.

Why are people paying so much money for these cards on eBay? I guess I'm missing something....

And along those lines, I've got access to some free DishNet equipment that's 2-3 years old. What can I accomplish with this at "low cost"?

a lot of people have money invested in their DTV systems and since the p4/p5 cards are the new ones they are going for so much more. Your free dishnet stuff is probably a carded version but if its free then just get the hack and the card if needed. If you have a bit of money($450-800 depending on where you are) you can get the Blackbird system. I wont be responding anymore tonight as I am tired. I'll check back in the morning...hopefully you get some others advice as well.
