It was suggested to me to plainly mount the rears against the wall elevated at 6 ft... either angled downward or straight ahead,, and to not worry since my reciever does automatic calibration... can anyone comment or agree? Silver Member Username: HuronPost Number: 296 Registered: Mar-07 | why do you want to go to 7.1? and placing speakers like that and thinking that your receiver will fix everything, NO, even with a normal speaker setup your better off manually setting up your speakers, and if your couch is up against the wall is there anyway that we can change that? |

Bronze Member Username: Mikeo1313Post Number: 14 Registered: Jun-06 | well I went with 7.1 since I bought a 5.1 Polk rm-7500 set, but also wanted to get some floorstanding since I had doubts that small speaker would do well for me while listening to music, so I got a pair.. As a result I got 7.1 speakers + my reciever can handle it.. I overread how there isn't any stuff out there with 7.1 anyway, but thought, since I got'em might as well use them. So are you suggesting maybe not worrying about them or using precense channel instead of rear? I talked with someone yesterday that suggested the same about manual over auto calibration. Said something about buying an SPL meter, never did it before but hopefully will delve more into that next week once I finally decide what to do with my rears. For now I really can't change the couch, its a huge sectional and we got tired of where it was and re-arranged everything and wall mounted my lcd to accomodate.. |

Silver Member Username: HuronPost Number: 300 Registered: Mar-07 | time to break out the tape measure, as far as a SPL meter I dont have one there good for a true referance and then adjusting to how you like things, but its not a must, years ago I started with my futon against the back wall I allways new I had to pull it away but I didnt like the idea of space in the back and having less in the center room, but I love listening to music and watching movies the right way, over time the futon got moved further and further out untill now its 1/3 the distance and its staying, I think you need to pull the couch out 2 feet minimum, as a rule you should have the speakers minimum one foot away from the wall and angled away from the wall, and you need the rears behind you some how, I have yet to see a speaker setup guide with the couch to the back wall, http://www.soundstage.com/surrounded/surrounded200307.htm just look at the diagram in hear this is close to what you want, I like my rear speakers further in back of me http://www.dolby.com/consumer/home_entertainment/roomlayout2.html this is the layout you will find most, but like I said I like the rear speakers more behind me |
