She has a compaq with Athlon AMD 2700 processor with 768mb ram and some crappy factory vid card. I was thinkin about gettin a decent video card but will that help alot? Or is the processor to slow for gaming?

The Athlon AMD 2700 is clocked in at 2.17GHz. It is ok for gaming. A decent video card will help alot. But in all, it depeneds on what games you play/planning on playing.

I have the same processor it'll be fine. Just upgrade to a 1GB stick of PC2700 ram and buy a 512 MB graphics card. I have a 512MB GeFOrce 7600 card and it does fine

Mark, if you give me your budget, some of the higher games you play, and your motherboard model #, I can find you a vid card that will work.

"ram ram ram ram and a 256mb card should do u fine"

256mb are you kidding me?
If hes getting into PC gaming, he will want more than that.

Also, You really, depending on your mobo, you can keep the sticks of ram you have now, and add a 500mb-1gb stick or so, that would be plenty.

okay, im new to car audio, but computers are my deal.....first off BUILD OWN SYSTEM is a must, much cheaper and when things go down you know alot about what your running, so lets start with 2g's of ram, that will last you for like 2 yrs so ya dont have upgrade, now i run the athalon , dual core 3700, with a a ASE, sli delux mother board that support up to 5g's do get a motherboard that support alot of ram so u can upgrade.....processor wise the 2800 is fine, i paid a pretty penny, but saved money on self install, for the vid card if your mb is pci try and get a 6600 pci express for the "entry" level this shall play everything on "good settings" you may want a sweet case, Xplorer is what i have and mine runns at like 68 degrees farenhite, so thoes cases are sweet for ya, leave me a post and ill go into more detail

Beef up your video card and ram for sure. Also make sure to turn off any programs that aren't essential. If you're playing FPS(First Person Shooters) keep all settings down and try to hit at least 80FPS(Frames per second) because you usually play better with more FPS because it's smoother.I was able to break 100FPS in CS:S,not bad for an older rig but I keep it clean though!

I currently am involved and own one of call of duty 2's biggest gaming server! I have been gaming for about 2 years now and have learned alot about computers from playing this game!

If you have 512 mb in your computer that will do just fine! An upgrade to 1gb would be helpfull but is not at all needed. If you want to improve your game all you will need is a new graphics card. I will give you a link for a exellent graphics card for only 120$. I have this card and I play cod2 at full resolution running any were from 70fps to 250 fps. It's a great card and is all you need. Here is the link.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=30485 52&Sku=P450-8650

Also if you need help installing it and want to save 100$ here is my cod2 website with a little tutorial on installing vidio cards.

Do what i said and beleave me you will be set!

Trouble with newegg is they don't have sale representitives that you can actually one on one talk with. Just email.

With tigerdirect they have 24hr a day sales representitives and you dont have to put your credit card online. With new egg you do!

But from what I hear newegg is really reliable and are pretty quik to answer your emails. I just don't like putting credit card numbers online and I like to talk instead of wait for an email. Fu.ck that.

Ide go with tiger.

Ok...Listen up.If you turn off all of your running programs there is not a game out there to this day that runs over 400 mb of ram! 512 mb is fine! 1gb would be a help thoe.

Point is, is that unless your looking to play two games at once while running limewire and 10 other utilities you will not need more than 512mb of ram! If you just want to play the game and not do all of that and arent a multitasker you won't need
1gb.

Before I upgraded to 1gb I was running cod2,rcon 4 ,limewire, mozzila firefox with about 20 tabs, and a.v.g antivirus and was downloading on limewire with no lag at all!!!! I was using about 3/4 of my ram! Now that I have 1gb I have all that same sh.it open that I listed before and some and I am only using 450 mb! So the extra 512 is not needed its just a bonus. I still have 562 mb of ram that isn't evan being touched.

If you have a bunch of bs on your pc that is not needed then get rid of it. Download spybot search and destroy and run a scan. Also clear all your cookies and temp internet folders.

If you want to clear about 50 to 100 mb of ram. Do this.

1.Click start on the bottom left hand on your screen.
2.Find (Run) and click it.
3.Type in the command box (msconfig) click ok
4.Go to the startup tab and de-select all of your startup programs.
5.click ok and your computer will restart

This will make your computer alot faster and get rid of the un needed bs that slows your pc down.

Peace

i'm going to call b f'n s on that one pimp.

and if u do msconfig it only stops items that come up at start up, which means they can come back. I'd like to see u play a source or bf2 or any other FPS with all that open with lag.

Tiger Direct's sales people are usually ignorant and aren't very helpful.I've talked to them a few times about product availability and they were having sh1t fits. It'd be nice if you could check store stock from the website but...I guess that would involve too much work for them.I do like Tiger Direct but their support VIA phone sucks.Example I had purchased a monitor and it had a burned pixel and over the phone they told me it was tough luck because it was a single pixel and they said they'd only exchange if it was a cluster f uck of burned pixels in the same spot.Well...I'm not dropping 300 bucks on something that has an eye sore on it so I went into the store and shot the girl working a couple winks and they took it back. They're really helpful at their stores but their over the phone support is garbage.Oh and about running only 512 MB of ram well...you can pull it off but 512MB of very slow clocked ram will not do the job.You have to keep in mind ram speeds can vary greatly and most of these kids see a number and think more is better but that's not the case.My 1 gig of Corsair Twin XMS XL smokes my buddies 2 gigs of Geil ram and I paid a lot more for my 1 gig than he did for his 2 gigs. The fact that my PC smokes his in every way makes him want to cry.You can easily run things on 512 but it has to be GOOD sh1t and not trash off the shelf ram.

You could have the greatest video card in the world and your processor and ram will hold it back mucho.

Pimp,
you cannot just de-select every start up prog, you need some of those...mine runs around 300-500mb at idle. Vista uses 1gig @ idle. so to say that all you need is 1gig is not true. I've ran like Bioshock and alt+tab out and have been using 1gig+......ram is dirt cheap, so don't slop out!

Also,
What size screen are you using? As the number 256mb, 320mb, 512mb is only needed when you game on super high resolutions on large screens.

For instance I run Bioshock cranked to the max on my 8800 gts 320mb card. (resolution is 1280x1024) and my frames have not dropped once and I avg around 50-60 fps. So me to go out and buy a 8800 gts 512mb+ card would be absolutely retarded as I will never need it on my 19" screen as it maxes out at the 1280x1024 settings.

My comp:
Dual AMD 4600+ processors, 2gigs ram, 8800gts 320mb Super clocked, 600 watt OCZ power supply.

Nothing insane as I picked the comp up at Futureshop and added the graphics card and power supply. My comp now is like $799 CDN brand new, plus like $100-150 for the power supply and $300-400 for the card. So like $1,000 can get you a decent comp. Now they have the Intel Core Duo processors and they are faster and use less power than the AMD's.......I use NCIX for all my stuff, great place.

And what was stated above by Hurricane Br1an comps are cheap, save up a little and buy one that accepts pci-e cards and go from there as AGP cards are being left behind.

"ram is dirt cheap, so don't slop out!"

I'm not sure what you're smoking but ram is not dirt cheap.I paid 340 dollars plus shipping from the lowest priced dealer for 1 gig of my Corsair ram.GOOD ram is never dirt cheap and you get what you pay for.Quanity is not better than quality in this case as I mentioned above that my 1 Gig matched pair smokes the crap out of most 2 gig setups. It's not just the amount of ram it's speed and latency and power consumption.Ram with higher speeds will usually need a voltage boost in order to get full potential out of it.I can't believe you said ram is dirt cheap...shows how little you know.Oh and the 340 dollars is cheap for ram when it comes to a gaming comp.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145187

That's not that cheap now is it?In case you were wondering...yea...there is more expensive ram than that.

For practical applications ram is cheap. I have 2 gigs of some unknown brand of ram as it came with my comp and I have never had a single problem with it and have barely gone over the 1gig mark with many apps running as well as games.

I was just proving a point.I'd rather spend money on quality ram then random and unsafe ram that's unreliable.RAM does fail you know...do you have matched sticks? You probably don't...

I'm not saying he doesn't know! And yeah ram fails all the time, but I can not justify spending $340 on a 1gig stick, well not yet anyways.

We'll see what happens with future games as so far I can run every game I own maxed out @ 1280x1024. (BF2, Bioshock, C&C 3, Condemned, FEAR, Prey...etc)

I have 2x1gig sticks of ram and the reason that I don't know what kind they are is that they came with my computer from HP/Futureshop....it was cheaper than piecing one together as I paid $1,400 for it around a year ago and it beats my buddies comp who spent $2,200 building it from scratch and he bought it about 3 months before I bought mine but he went with a mobo that doesn't accept PCI-E cards, tis a shame.

My comp came with:

2x1gig ram (4g max, room for 4 sticks)
Dual AMD 4600+, 2.4ghz
Asus mobo
19" lcd flat screen
wireless mouse/keyboard (craptastic)
Windows Media edition
Fire wire and card reader
300w psu
320gig HDD

And I have added:

Seagate 500g external HDD
Logitech G-11
8800 GTS 320mb Super Clocked that idles at 47-51c depends on ambient temps
600w OCZ psu

You paid for your ram what I paid for my GPU!

This isn't a fantastic set up, but it runs everything I have thrown at it without any hickups. Crysis is another story..we'll see what happens there!

Just an infamous scammer in the car audio world. He was a box builder and scammed lots of people out of their money and never delivered product as he said he was going to.Just google his name and I'm sure you'll find all the dirt.
