Hi
Need some help on buying an amplifier. I wanted to power a Kicker L7 8" 450rms subwoofer in a free air baffle setup. In a BMW 3 Series E46. I read that free air require more power then sealed boxes and sealed require more power then ported. I was thinking of powering it with a Hifonics Brutus 1206d Amplifier rated at 900watts rms @ 2 ohms. Do you think this is too much? I heard good things about Hifonics amps but were believed to be overrated. Anyone have a suggestion on amps. What amps are the best? Can someone list best to worst amplifiers. Thanks

Free air sucks big time. Ported enclosure is usually the way to go. And if you did use a sub free air it must be specifically designed for that (that kicker isnt), and will take a lot LESS power than it would in a real enclosure. Also look into other subs, square kickers have terrible SQ.

Really, that bad. I thought kicker l7's were compareable to w7, xxx, etc. And how bad are free air setups? isn't it just like having the trunk act as a big box. I wanted to have nice fairly loud, deep bass. My trunk is a bass eater so cutting a hole through would sound louder wouldn't it. Does everyone thing this setup sucks, if so, i'll scrap the plans. What do people recommend. Currently I have a 10" Alpine Type R in a small sealed box pushed by an alpine mrp-450 at 400watts rms@2ohms in my integ. This system sucks. Thought about putting it in a ported box, but don't know were I can get a custom tuned box cheap. Any suggestions. Thanks

put that type r in a better box and get a bigger amp for it. There are some guys in here pushing over 1000rms to 1 type r
