Dual Voicecoil Question

I'm looking into some JL W6v2s and they are dual voicecoil and handle 400w RMS. Now my question does that mean each VC handles 400w or does it mean in total so each only takes 200w? So would I need an 800w amp or a 1600w amp to fully power 2 of these beasts?

The RMS rating is the total for both coils

forgive me for being further ignorant but does that mean if the rms rating is 400w total then u would only want 200w per coil. In which case a 4 channel 800w amp would power 2 of them perfectly?

each sub should get 400wrms...so an amp that does 800rms at the right ohm load would be good. you dont need a 4 channel amp or a 2 channel amp, get a mono-channel amp for them

Yes

Right about the 800 watts, wrong on the amp type. You want a mono a.k.a. class D amp for subwoofers. The amp needs to do 800 watts at whatever impedance (ohm load) the subs will be wired to. (possible wiring configs depends on what ohms the coils are).

So would a 800w SPL Z4X 4 channel work well? I believe it can be switched to a mono setting.

That's a crap brand.

This should help you decide what brands to consider:

The w6v2's are dvc 4, so if you have 2 of em, final load impedance is 1 ohm. So get an amp that does about 1000 wrms at 1 ohm.
400wrms is the recommended JL limet, But they will take 600 or so easily.

What?

The amp is made by SPL no garbage dual brand and what is the deal with people ending the posts with "what?" Is that an attempt at texted scarcasim? Not being a dick just curious. But back to the point, what if i ran the coils in parallel then bridged the amp in 2 channel mode?

do you already have the 4 channel or something? if not, don't buy it, get a mono, 800-1000wrms.

and spl isn't the greatest, i.e. why it was referred to as a crap brand.

email kevin, lowhz01@yahoo.com, ask for a sundown 1000d. it'll be perfect for those and he'll get you a great price.
