one box is not always louder than the other ones.

some are louder in high frequencies and some on low frequencies. some have really high frequency extension(mainly a sealed box). a box might be louder than another x box in certain frequencies but the other box will be louder on x range of frequencies. some boxes are made like i said to reduce distortion and have really REALLY flat response.

and if you see two subs one sub on top of the other wired out of phase creating a push pull motion. that is not for spl or to improve loudness.

that is called push-pull configuration. and is one driver mounted normally and the second is mounted on top of it so it faces into the enclousure, both sharing same internal volume and they are wired out of phasem although they are out of phase with one another the configuration the 2 drivers are mounted are acoustically in phace since they move in the same direction.

this is mainly to reduce wat is called second order harmonic distortion.

"some have really high frequency extension(mainly a sealed box)"

high frequency extension is not like high frequency peaks or loudness if your thinking of that. is kind of like an extension in other words very large flat response or very flat frequency extension avoiding any peaks cause harmonic distortion :-)

I,ve had a Bandpass, ported, and sealed

Bandpass - Ported in the back and closed in the front...It got pretty loud, but sounded not good at all..It also looked the coolest to be honest, had neons in it and all...But SQ was horriable

Sealed - Most Excursion came from this and SQ was pretty good..But not many subs like sealed enclosures, it seemed to sound better and louder when you would load the subs facing In...I had it at one point one in the other out (no hommo)..Wich this got the loudest out of all the ways i liked this one, but the box kept tipping over

Ported - the boc was ported two 40 hz...This one was my all time favorite, it got nice and loud and it sounded really good...It was ported on the side, round port that is, ports are good cause you get both the front and back sound from the sub excursioning in and out (no Hommo)

For SPL...The bandpass or the Ported
For SQ... The Sealed, well depends on subs, some far better with a Ported enclosure more than a sealed one

I was meaning it in the way that it sounded like you meant the sub when really high in frequency instead of low or didn't go low at all. That's all I was saying lol.

Steve Meade has something to do with this, I'm just not sure what!

Good Question! I have had numerous boxes, I like Ported myself they sounds the pretty good all around. SPL was awesome out of a Upload
I had it loaded with 2 15 1000watt JBL subs. in the bed of a nissan pickup it only had my 250hcca on it at 2 ohm, so maybe 150 per sub and it kick azz, can't imagine 1000 per sub!!! Serious kidney damage!!! I had 3 ss12 infinite baffle I competed with those for over 3 years, other than trading them out 3 times, I love employee discount!!! Upload I have to go but will write more when get home. Keep thread going I want to hear what ppl think!
