I'm lookin at getting a new headunit for my boat. I was wondering how crucial is it to have a marine head unit? Could u just toss a car audio unit in as long as its in a safe place and your careful it wont get wet? Also, how would i find out if a certain car head unit would fit where my old clarion was??

It's not so much direct water getting on the unit but the moisture. Marine head units are specially made to resist moisture with gaskets, stainless steel screws, and coated circuit boards. Also, most of them are made to be UV resistant.

marine HUs like brad said are made of different internal parts so they will last longer. if you have a big boat with a closed cabin you will probly be fine with a car HU.
